PURPOSE
The purpose of the class is to teach basic music theory, terminology and beginning
technique on wind and percussion instruments, as well as encourage professional
behavior in rehearsal, as well as in concert.

INSTRUMENTS
Students may be assigned instrument lockers, folders, and sheet music. Students are
encouraged to own or rent their own instruments, however some school instruments are
available for loan. Please contact Mr. Jamora for more information should you want
purchase an instrument or rent from a store. Students are expected to show care for
CdM Music Dept. equipment, and return it at the end of the loan period in good
condition, with all of the accessories that were provided at the beginning of the year.
Students should report any damage to Mr. Jamora. Do not attempt to fix a damaged
instrument on your own, or use commercial products.

METHOD BOOKS
We will be using the Tradition of Excellence Book 1 by Bruce Pearson & Ryan Nowlin.
Each student will be assigned a book – the books are specific to the instrument that the
student plays. Students will be expected to return the book in good condition (without
pen or pencil markings), or provide a replacement at the end of the year. Students may
also purchase and use their own books throughout the year. The books are available at
most music stories and online, usually for less than $15.

GRADES

categories that contribute to the student’s grade are:

● Basic Form and Technique – Proper demonstration of basic playing technique

● Rehearsal Procedure - Regular contribution to the daily rehearsals.

● Performance – Performing in our formal concerts and events (see below)

CONCERTS
Students are required to participate in the group performances as part of the
performance grade. All required performances are listed as assignments in Schoology,
and will include a link to instructions, including meet times, dress code, etc. Absences
will be handled according to the performance absence policy.

PERFORMANCE ATTIRE
Students are asked to adhere to a dress code for the formal concerts, as a way of
showing respect for the craft. Following the attire standards as described is also part of
the performance grade. Students who are unable to acquire proper concert clothes
need to contact Mr. Jamora for assistance.
