DESIGN PROJECT PROPOSAL

We constructed a device which represents an automated mouse trap with the

use of electro-pneumatic components. This is to help rid our homes of pests, particularly
mice. Cats aren’t really that efficient when you really look at it, they damage your
furniture and sometimes, they are also risks to people with respiratory ailments like
asthma. We made this as an alternative in solving the pet’s problem. Our trap design
has a barricade made of aluminum, a light weight metal that can be easily lifted by a
cylinder. The barricade is formed into a mesh to be able to see if it already caught
something. We made use of an Optical Sensor as its mechanical actuator and a Detent
Limit Switch as its manual override for the barricade and its buzzer’s actuation to relay
number 6. When the Optical Sensor senses any movement inside the trap, the barricade
would be actuated together the buzzer. The buzzer would be the signal to the
homeowner that the trap already caught a mouse. The remaining cylinders would rely on
manual actuation.

The barricade is made in a shape of a cube. It has dimensions are 1 x 1 feet. The
wire connecting to a power outlet is protected by a thick coating to prevent damage and
so that it would be easily bit by pests like rats.

CHAPTER 3
DEFINITIONS

ACTIVATED
To be busy and use lots of energy

ACTUATOR
Cause somebody to act in particular way

BARRICADE
is any object or structure that creates a barrier or obstacle to control, block
passage or force the flow of traffic in the desired direction.

BUZZER
is a signaling device, usually electronic, typically used in automobiles, household
appliances such as a microwave oven, or game shows.

COMPONENT
A part of machine or system

CONTACT ASSEMBLY
The coming together or touching of two bodies

CYLINDER

Shape with circular ends and straight side

ELECTRO-PNEUMATICS
is a control system for pipe organs, whereby air pressure, controlled by an t and
operated by the keys of an organ console, opens and closes valves within wind
chests, allowing the pipes to speak. This system also allows the console to be
physically detached from the organ itself. The only connection was via an
electrical cable from the console to the relay, with some early organ consoles
utilizing a separate wind supply to operate combination pistons.
6
ENERGIZED
The strength to do active things without getting tired
The power by which anything acts effectively to move or change other things or
accomplish any result.

EXTEND
To open or stretch full length
To make longer ,to cause to last until or for a specified time

LAMP
A light that uses gas ,oil or electricity

LATCHING SIGNAL

Which runs through the laskets and keys then , preventing their unreeving.

LED
Light Emitting Diode are special diodes that emit light when connected in a circuit

NORMALLY CLOSED

A switch that is "closed" conducts electricity. Normally closed switches are often
spring loaded. The "normal" position of the switch defines its position when it is
not being pressed, that is, the position to which it is forced by the action of the
spring. A normally closed switch, thus, is one that is spring loaded and conducts
electricity when it is not being pressed. Pressing the switch stops the flow of
electricity.

NORMALLY OPEN
is one that normally prevents current flow and which allows current to flow when
it is perturbed. Such a switch requires a constant intervention in order to keep it
closed. A non-electronic example of this would be the safety on a lawnmower,
which will prevent gas flow to the engine when it is let go.
7
OPTICAL SENSOR
Sensors are used in everyday objects such as touch-sensitive elevator buttons
and lamps which dim or brighten by touching the base. There are also
innumerable applications for sensors of which most people are never aware.
Applications include automobiles, machines, aerospace, medicine, industry, and
robotics.

is a device that measures a physical quantity and converts it into a signal which
can be read by an observer or by an instrument.

RELAY
is an electrical switch that opens and closes under the control of another
electrical circuit. In the original form, the switch is operated by an electromagnet
to open or close one or many sets of contacts.

RETRACT
To take back an assertion

SOLENOID
is a switch for routing air to any pneumatic device, usually an actuator of
some kind. A solenoid consists of a balanced or easily movable core, which
channels the gas to the appropriate port, coupled to a small linear solenoid.

SOLENOID VALVE
An electromechanical valve controlled by running or stopping an electrical current
through a solenoid , which is a coil of wire, thus changing the state of the valve.

8
VOLTAGE
is the difference of electrical potential between two points of an electrical or
electronic circuit, expressed in volts.

It measures the potential energy of an electric field to cause an electric current in

an electrical conductor. Depending on the difference of electrical potential it is
called extra low voltage, low voltage, high voltage or extra high voltage.
SERIES

An arrangement of one thing after another

Schematics Diagram Analysis

The operation starts by a turning the switch 1 “on” which is in series with the
normally closed switch 2, after the relay k1 has been energized which is in series with
the normally closed switch 2 then a latching signal is activated. Then all the contact
assembly k1 will be energized. Now the Optical Sensor is now energized and ready, it
will be activated when it senses a mouse or any moving object. Then the relay K2 has
been energized and it is contact assembly K2 will also energize which is series with
solenoid y1 together with buzzer. . When the solenoid y1 and the buzzer have been
energized, the barricade will drop down to close the cage, and the buzzer will call the
attention of human.

Then the operation of switch 3 by turning “on” which is in serves with the k1,
closed contact assembly of k6 and k4, then at after the relay k3 has been energized the
contact assembly k3 will also be energized which is in series with the solenoid y2 and y3
which y2 and y3 are in parallel. Then all the contact assembly k3 will be energized.
When the solenoid y2 and solenoid y3 has been energized called a twin crusher, the
cylinder y2 and cylinder y3 will extend to crash the object inside the device. The moment
relay k3 has been energized the contact assembly on series with the normally open
switch 4 will turn to normally open contact assembly wherein the switch 4 will be
unavailable.

Then the operation of switch 4 by turning “on” which is in series with contact
assemblies k1, then after the relay k4 has been energized the contact assembly k4 will
also be energized which is in series with the solenoid y4. When the solenoid y4 has
been energized called the upper crusher, the cylinder 4 will extend to crush the object
inside the device. Either of the switch 3 or switch 4 can switch it “on”. Because we would
like to prevent banging of the cylinder to each other, that why either of the two switch.

Then the operation of the switch 5 by turning “on” which is in series with contact
assembly k1 and k6, then after relay k5 has been energized the contact assembly k5 will
also be energized which is in series with the solenoid y5. When the solenoid y5 has
21
been energized, the cylinder will extend to eject the object inside the device. But
the switch 5 is unavailable unless the contact assembly k6 in its series connection has
been energized.

Then the operation of the Detent switch 6 by turning “on” switch is in series by
contact which is in series by contact assembly k1, then after the relay k6 has been
energized all the contact assembly k6 will be energized. Then the contact assembly k6
on the series worth relay k2 will be turned in to normally open contact assembly k6 an
the energy signal being send to relay k2 will be cut off making the solenoid y1 retract. A
lamp will turn “on” indicating that relay k6 has been energized.

Then the operation of switch 7 by turning “on” which in series with contact
assembly with k1 will serves as manual override if ever the optical sensor failed to send
energy signal then the operation of the normally closed switch 2 by turning to normally
open which is in series with switch 1 or in series with contact assembly k1 will de-
energized the relay k1 and the whole system.
