Installation Verification Overview

1 Installation Verification Overview

The purpose of the functional test is to verify that the installation and basic
configuration of a site has been done properly.

Perform the tests applicable to the configuration and record the result in the test
record, see Template for MINI-LINK Functional Test Record.

Preparations

3 Preparations

This section presents the preparations needed to complete the procedures

in this instruction.

3.1 Required HW Tools

The following HW tools are required:
• Analyzer for Ethernet
• Digital voltmeter

3.2 Additional Preparations

Consider the following additional preparations:

• All hardware must be installed and configured. The antennas must be

aligned for maximum received level before making the tests.

• Make sure the Site Installation Documentation (SID) is available. The

SID is prepared during the planning phase and is supplied by the design
department.

• Complete the SID with information, serial number, hardware revision, and
software revision for the equipment installed.

• Read through all applicable sections and make sure referenced documents
are available.

• Make sure you have access to the Network Element (NE) using Command
Line Interface (CLI). For more information, see Accessing a Network
Element.

• Make sure that the test results are recorded. For this purpose, see
Template for MINI-LINK Functional Test Record. Download the template
on your PC or print the template before going on site, and fill it in with the
test results.

Verifying the DC Supply

4 Verifying the DC Supply

This section describes the power supply test to be performed on a site.

Purpose: To verify that the correct DC power (according to Site Requirements)

is fed to the packet radio.

1. Measure the primary DC voltage in the power cable using a digital voltmeter.

Note: Perform the measurement before connecting the DC cable to the

packet radio.

2. Connect the DC cable to the packet radio.

Verifying the Radio Link Parameters

5 Verifying the Radio Link Parameters

Purpose: To verify that the correct parameters are used, to document and
verify that the output power corresponds to the planned value, and to verify that
the RF input level corresponds to the planned value in the SID.

1. Show the radio link configuration parameters:

# Show the near-end carrier termination information:

#
end; show config slot 1 ct 1

# Show the far-end carrier termination information:

#
end; show config slot 1 ct 1 far

# Show the near-end radio link information:

#
end; show config slot 1 rlt 1

# Show the far-end radio link information:

#
end; show config slot 1 rlt 1 far

2. Check that the radio link configuration parameters are set according to
the SID.

3. Check the output power (actual-transmitted-level) and document the

value in the test record. Compare the value with the value in the SID.
Contact the design department if any deviations.

For more information on how to check the configuration including the radio link
parameters, see CLI Descriptions. The basic radio link parameters are also
shown in the Node GUI.

Verifying the RF Input Level

6 Verifying the RF Input Level

Purpose: To verify that the RF input level matches the planned value in the
SID.

To verify the RF input level:

1. On the near end, enable alignment mode:

end; config slot 1 ct 1 alignment-mode ENABLED

2. On the far end, enable alignment mode.

3. On the near end, show the received RF input level:

end; show config slot 1 ct 1

4. On the far end, show the received input level.

5. Document the RF input level (actual-input-level) value in the test record

for the near end and the far end.

6. Compare the RF input level with the planned level in the SID. Consult the
design department if the difference is more than ±5 dB during unfaded
conditions.

7. On the near end, disable alignment mode:

end; config slot 1 ct 1 alignment-mode DISABLED

8. On the far end, disable alignment mode.

Measuring the RF Interference Level

7 Measuring the RF Interference Level

Purpose: To verify that there are no interfering signals, which can degrade
the performance.
• Access the far-end and the near-end terminals using a terminal window and
switch off the transmitters.

# Turn the far end transmitter off:

#
end; show config slot 1 ct 1 far tx-admin-status off

# Turn the near end transmitter off:

#
end; show config slot 1 ct 1 tx-admin-status off

• Find the received RF input level at the planned operating frequency and
record the value on the Functional Test record.

In the CLI, enter the following command:

end; show config slot 1 ct 1

Record the value of the actual-input-power attribute.

• Consult the design department if the level exceeds the RF input level
stated in Table 1.

The stated interference input level corresponds to a threshold degradation

of 1 dB. In cases where a 3 dB degradation is acceptable, the interference
level can be increased with 6 dB.

Table 1 Maximum RF Input Level with Remote TX Off

Channel Spacing Maximum RF Input
Frame ID
(MHz) Level (dBm)
50 279 –78
100 280 –75
150 281 –74
200 282 –70
250 283 –71
• After the test has been performed, activate the transmitters and restore
the communication over the hop.

# Turn the near end transmitter on:

#
end; show config slot 1 ct 1 tx-admin-status on

Verifying the WAN Port Link Status

8 Verifying the WAN Port Link Status

Purpose: To verify that the WAN port is working correctly.

# Check the status of slot 1, WAN:

#
end; show config slot 1 wan

Make sure that linkStatus is up.

Checking Active Alarms

9 Checking Active Alarms

Purpose: To verify that the NE is functioning properly.

1. Check that no near-end alarms are active:

# Show current alarms:
#
end; show config common notification-log current-alarms
entryThis example shows a typical output of the lowest two channels,
when running the script above:

PT# end; show config common notification-log current-alarms entry

Verifying the DCN Connection

10 Verifying the DCN Connection

Purpose: To verify the DCN.

Use the ping command to verify the DCN or another Ethernet connection on the
network, for example, any equipment connected on the far side of the hop.

1. Ping the remote host.

Note: To be able to ping you must have an operational host on the

remote side.

This example script pings the host with the IP address 10.128.60.2:
end; config ip ping 10.128.60.2

2. Show the result of the ping:

end; show config ip ping 10.128.60.2

3. Call the Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) or the Network

Administrator and ask for a check of the DCN connection.

For more information on the ping command, see CLI Descriptions.

Performing an RFC 2544 Throughput Test

11 Performing an RFC 2544 Throughput Test

Purpose: To verify the maximum rate at which frames can be transmitted from
the source to the destination with zero lost frames or errors.

Note: If this test is done on a live network, the required test traffic interferes
with customer traffic and can result in disrupted service and erroneous
test results.

1. Connect an Ethernet analyzer to the far end of the network.

2. Connect an Ethernet analyzer to the near end of the network. It is

recommended to use an Ethernet analyzer capable of automated RFC
2544 throughput tests.

3. Perform the throughput test for each frame size and document the test
results in the test record.

Concluding Routines

12 Concluding Routines

The configuration file should be stored when the installation verification is

complete. It is also recommended to restart the NE to clear the alarm list and
the logs.

12.1 Backing Up the Configuration File

Purpose: To ensure that the verified configuration file is stored and accessible
for future use.
• Upload the configuration file to the PC using the Node GUI, or upload it to
an external SSH or SFTP server using the CLI.

The following example script backs up a configuration file:

# Back up the configuration file:
#
# This example backs up the configuration file as
# 10.128.60.2_2014-05-20.cdb on the SFTP server at 10.128.60.2:
#
end; config common cdb backup filename 10.128.60.2_2014-05-20.cd
mode sftp ip 10.128.60.2 port 22 user sftp-user password sftp-pw
• Store the configuration file as backup.

For more information on how to back up or restore a configuration file, see

Backing Up and Restoring a Configuration File.

12.2 Restarting the NE

It is recommended to perform a cold restart on both near-end and far-end
terminals, to clear the alarm list and the performance and event logs.

Caution!

A cold restart will disturb the traffic.

1. Perform a cold restart of the NE:

end; config common reboot

2. Verify time and date settings after the NE has performed the cold restart:
end; show config common time
