TUTORIAL NO. 2

NOTE: (a) Assume missing DATA if any. (b) Basic principles to be followed for problem solving in engineering,
industry and research.
– Carefully define the problem.
– Present everything you know about the problem.
– Establish a set of alternative solutions and determine the one that promises the greatest likelihood
of success.
– Attempt a problem solution.
– Evaluate the solution and check for accuracy.
– Has the problem been solved Satisfactorily? If so, present the solution; if not, then return to step 3
and continue through the process again.

1. Solve for io and vo in Fig. 1 (a) and calculate the power dissipated is 3Ω resistor.

2. For Fig. 1 (b), find v1 , v2 , i1 , i2 and power dissipated in 12Ω and 4Ω resistor.

3. For Fig. 1 (c), determine vo , power supplied by current source, power absorbed by each resistor.

4. For Fig. 1 (d), find v1 , v2 and power dissipated in 3kΩ and 20kΩ resistor and power supplied by current source.

5. For Fig. 1 (e) and (f), find Rab , i.

6. Three light bulbs are connected to a 9-V battery as shown in Fig. 1(g). Calculate:
(a) The total current supplied by the battery.
(b) The current through each bulb.
(c) the resistance of each bulb.

7. Following the voltmeter setup of Fig.1 (h), (i), design a voltmeter for the following multiple ranges:
(a) 0–1 V
(b) 0–5 V
(c) 0–50 V
(d) 0–100 V
Assume that the internal resistance Rm = 2kΩ and the full-scale current If s = 100µA.

8. Calculate the node voltages in the circuit shown in Fig. 1 (l).

9. Calculate the node voltages in the circuit shown in Fig. 1 (m).

10. Calculate the node voltages in the circuit shown in Fig. 1 (n).

11. Calculate i1 , i4 in Fig. 1 (o).
