Exploring the World of Sharks

Sharks are captivating creatures that have captured the attention of scientists and marine
enthusiasts around the world. With their distinctive features and crucial ecological roles, sharks
play a vital part in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. According to
scientists, there are over 500 known species of sharks, each with its unique characteristics and
adaptations (Compagno et al., 2005). These diverse species range in size from the small dwarf
lanternshark, measuring only 17 centimeters, to the mighty whale shark, which can reach
lengths of up to 12 meters (Simpfendorfer et al., 2002; Castro, 2011). Sharks' bodies are
designed for speed and efficiency in the water, with their sleek torpedo-shaped form and rough,
sandpaper-like skin made up of dermal denticles (Martin et al., 2007). Their skeletons are
composed of cartilage rather than bone, providing them with flexibility and enabling quick
movements (Dingerkus & DeFino, 1983). These remarkable characteristics make sharks one
of the most fascinating and diverse groups of marine animals in existence.
