Course Title: HEMATOLOGY 1


Course Credit: 4 units (3 units lecture and 1 unit laboratory)
Contact Hours: Lecture: 3 hours per week (54 hours)
Laboratory: 3 hours per week (54 hours)
Placement: 3rd Year, 1st Semester
Pre-requisites : Histology, Biochemistry

Course Description:

This course deals with the study of blood as a tissue and the pathophysiology of the cellular
elements of blood. Emphasis is on laboratory diagnostic procedures.

Course Outcomes:

At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Explain the factors and principles of hematological determinations,


2. Recognize microscopically the different normal and abnormal blood cells,
3. Demonstrate competency in the collection, handling and transportation of specimen for
hematology tests,
4. Correlate the importance of hematological tests in the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases,
5. Apply concepts of quality assurance in Hematology,
6. Perform hematological tests with precision, accuracy and reliability, and
7. Develop the necessary skills such as technical, clinical, mathematical and judgment skills in
performing Hematology tests.
