Webinar Title: CURRUCULUM MAP: Its Implementation and Evaluation

Theme: -
Date: September 10, 2022
Prepared by: Ms. Joyce May Bolaños

The webinar, “CURRUCULUM MAP: Its Implementation and Evaluation” was

hosted by Phoenix Publishing House under their “Phoenix Kaagapay Program”

The session focuses on preparing a curriculum map which reflects the Private
Education Assistance Committee’s (PEAC) Certification standards on curriculum mapping.
The discussion was facilitated by Coach Narcy F. Ador Dionisio.
PEAC has the following standards on curriculum mapping:
1. It must be aligned with the philosophy, vision, mission, goals and objectives.
2. It must be aligned with the K-12 curriculum guides, standards, and competencies.
3. It must show unpacked K-12 standards and competencies in different ways in all subjects.
4. It must show horizontal alignment between standards, competencies, assessment,
instruction, and resources in all the learningunits.
5. It must articulate vertical learning progressions across the different grade levels.
The speaker presented a template that can be used for curriculum mapping. Since
SBA is a catholic school, there must also be a Christian formation standard included.

Mr. Dionisio discussed each area of the curriculum map template that he introduced.
Content Standard generalizes the body of knowledge, skills, and understanding that students
need to attain in a learning unit. Performance Standard states the desired culminating task for
performance that embodies real-life transfer of knowledge, understanding, and skills. He also
emphasized that it must be authentic, higher order, and useful. Meanwhile, the content of the
Christian Formation Standard must articulate human-oriented core values in the curriculum
that define the institution or the community it represents. He also discussed Learning
Competencies as the expectations of critical range, expanded from solid knowledge to
analytical understanding, to authentic skill.
Since standards are sometimes written as overarching and often complex, he also
discussed a technique which teachers can use to make sense of the standards, and then create
a focused learning targets to make them actionable. That is the UNPACKING technique. This
technique follows four steps.
Step 1. Identify what students need to know, understand, do, and value based on the
standards.
Step 2. List down the unpacked competencies (specific, measurable targets) and
identify the taxonomy level.
Step 3. Identify the conceptual understandings/transferable generalizations based on
the standards.
Step 4. To focus and guide the instruction and assessment , identify essential
questions to stimulate deep thinking and make new connections.

After discussing the steps, he also discussed how are the contents of the curriculum
map be transferred or used in learning planning. The content standard can be written or
reflected in the learning plan as part of the overall learning expectations, the same with the
performance and Christian formation standards. Aside from that, the performance standard is
also expected to be reflected in the learning plan through the mini-tasks aligned with it. On
the other hand, the Christian formation standard can also be reflected in the learning plan
through the integration of core values in the instructional procedure.
The activities are not only limited to in-person or offline activities to ensure that the
curriculum map can be adapted in any mode of teaching. The activities and assessments that
will be implemented must able the students to relate or transfer their learning to daily life and
real world situations and at the same time reflect and connect their learning with the school’s
PVMGO.
There are also three areas of evaluation in curriculum map. These are:
1. CONTENT. To ensure whether that the standards and competencies; activities and
assessments; and resources and integration of the PVMGO in the curriculum maps are
reflected in the unit learning plans and implemented in instruction.
2. PROCESS. To provide the basis for curriculum policy decisions, for feedback on
continuous curriculum adjustments and processes of curriculum implementation.
3. OUTCOME. To ensure that the curriculum is effective in promoting improved quality of
student learning.

The session ended after an open forum with the speaker.

Reflection
I’m not really exposed in curriculum mapping so through this webinar, I learned how
to craft, implement and evaluate one. This webinar made the process clearer to me especially
that I am still a little confused on what must I include under each area. The whole session
also made me appreciate the purpose of curriculum mapping for a guided teaching-learning
process. Another important takeaway that I got from this webinar is the importance of
unpacking to ensure a focused learning target. This also makes it easier for the teachers to
plan the lesson and the activities to be included.
Overall, this webinar is necessary foe me to be able to create a comprehensive
curriculum map that reflects PEAC’s standard on curriculum mapping.
