DESIGN CRITERIA AND CALCULATIONS

Bending Capacity of Roof Plate under Tires’ Loadings

I. GENERAL

A. SCOPE

The following calculations covers the analysis of the Bending Capacity of

Roof Plate under Tires’ Loadings.

B. REFERENCES

NSCP 2nd. Ed. National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015

Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11)

AISC 360-10

ASEP Steel Handbook

II. DESIGN PARAMETERS

A. STRUCTURAL STEEL

Roof Plate (6mm thickness)

III. DESIGN LOAD

A. DEAD LOADS

Yield strength of steel ASTM A36

Unit Weight of steel 77 kN/m^3

Bending Stress of Steel 0.75Fy

IV. DESIGN CALCULATIONS

3.00 kN
3.00 kN

Roof Plate and Tire Contact

A. Roof Plate Capacity Checking for Bending Failure
(Considering 2m distance of tires)

𝐹𝑡 = 𝐹𝑦𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 = 3.00 kN ; C = 3mm ; M = 3.00 kN x 0.80m = 2.40 kNm

b𝑑3 2.00(0.006)3
𝐼= = = 0.000000036 m4
12 12

MC 2.40(0.003)
𝑃𝐵 = = = 200000 kPa = 200 MPa
I 0.000000036

𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 0.75 𝑥 𝐹𝑦 = 0.75 x 250 = 187.50 MPa

The actual bending stress is greater than the allowable bending stress.

∴ Inadequate

Hence, to compensate for the inadequacy of the roof plate’s bending

stress it is recommended to use a 4mm thk steel plate/20mm ply board to
be placed below the wheel of the gondola anchor for proper load
distribution and to reduce excessive roof plate bending.

V. CONCLUSION

With the calculations and recommendations presented it is concluded that the

Bending Capacity of Roof Plate is safe for use. While assuming all materials/hardware
and structural steel members that will be used in construction follow the parameters
and additional recommendations in the design criteria and passed all the pertinent
testing needed. If there will be any changes with the presented design criteria above,
the implementation team should notify the Engineer for necessary checking and re-
analysis.
