8. COMMISSIONING THE VHRS
8.1 GENERAL PROCESS
The general process for commissioning the VHRS is as follows :

• Set the VHRS in the PROGRAMMING MODE.

• Read the instructions regarding how to change parameters (see appendix A2,
ch. 6) and how to implement the various functions (see appendix A2, ch. 7).

• Select the display language French, English, German, Spanish or Italian

(see appendix A3, ch. 2).

• Program the number of load cells for double or multi idler belt scales.

• Program the addresses of the load cells for double or multi idler belt scales.

• Introduce the correction coefficients of the load cells.

• On double and multi idler belt scales, measure the distance

between the weigh idler stations and introduce this value in the corresponding
parameter.

• Measure the length of the weighbridge. If the weighbridge length is other than
2.00 meters, program the new length into the controller.

• If the conveyor belt is not horizontal, program its inclination (see below).

• Proceed with zero setting.

Attention : the belt must be completely unloaded for the zero setting.

8.2 DETAILED PROCESS

Commission your belt scale as follows :

• Set the VHRS in PROGRAMMING mode

• Program the number of load cell

CONFIG OPTION.
Number of SFTs
ncel=1

page 10/20 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a

• Program the addresses of the load cells

Connect the first cell and display its address.

CONFIG OPTION.
SFT 1 address
adr1=0

Set this address to 1.

Connect the second cell and display its address.

CONFIG OPTION.
SFT 2 address
adr2=0

Set this address to 2.

Continue in this manner for all the cells.

• Introduce the load cells' correction coefficients

CONFIG OPTION.
SFT 1 Coeff
SFT 2 Coeff
SFT 3 Coeff
SFT 4 Coeff
cp1=NaN
cp2=NaN
cp3=NaN
cp4=NaN

These coefficients are written on the parallelograms(s).

• Introduce the distance between the weigh idler stations and the length of
the weighbridge.

If the weighbridge length is other than 2 m or if the number of weigh idler stations is
more than 1, introduce the correct values in the corresponding parameters.

Weigh idler station (s)

The parameters (w.b.) and (i.s.) are extremely important. The accuracy of your scale
depends on the accuracy with which these lengths are measured.

If the VHRS is equipped with only a single weighed idler, (i.s.) must be kept at zero.

• Program the conveyor belt inclination

If the conveyor is not horizontal, then program the conveyor angle.

CONFIG OPTION.
Conveyor angle
angl=0.0

The angle is in degrees (°).

• Proceed with the Zero setting procedure

The zero setting is carried out over 100m of the belt. However, this length can be
modified using the following parameter :

OPTIONAL CONFIG
Taring length
tarl=100.0m

page 12/20 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a

FUNCTIONS
Zero setting

The password must be set to 2 before this function can be carried out.
See appendix 2, ch. 5.

The Zero setting function measures and stores the weight of the weigh idler station plus
the weight of the empty belt.

Unload the belt and let it run for a few minutes so that it takes its normal position.

If this function has been requested while the belt is stopped, the message ERROR
will be displayed and the function will be cancelled.

During the zero setting function, the VHRS measures and stores the average empty belt
weight which will be used as a reference point during future empty belt tarings.

If this procedure has not been carried out, the VHRS will not calculate a
totalization and no flow rate will be displayed.

Once the zero setting function has been initialized, it enables the VHRS to indicate the
percentage of taring completed.

OPERATIONAL
% tare completed
tart=x.x %

As soon as the Zero setting is completed, it enables the VHRS to indicate the new
average belt weight :

METROLOGY
Initial tare
tarØ=x.x kg/m

Once these operations have been carried out your belt scale is ready for use. As
the weighing station is equipped with a factory calibrated digital speed pick-up
sensor, no further calibration is needed.

CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a page 13/20

8.3 EMPTY BELT TARING PROCEDURE
During empty belt taring the VHRS calculates the average empty belt weight. This
procedure enables the VHRS to take slight belt weight variations due to clogging or
fluctuating belt tension into account. Repeat the empty belt taring from time to time. It is
recommended to carry out this procedure every other week.

Empty belt taring is carried out over 100 m of the belt. However, this length can be
modified using the following parameter :

OPTIONAL CONFIG
Taring length
tarl=100.0 m

For the most accurate taring, the belt tare should be carried out over a whole number of
belt revolutions.

FUNCTIONS
Belt taring

Empty belt taring can be carried out either automatically or manually.

By default, the VHRS is set up to use the automatic mode.

EMPTY BELT TARING IN AUTOMATIC MODE

Empty belt taring is done every time the VHRS finds the belt empty. The belt is
considered to be empty if the load is less than the Taring threshold. The default value
of this threshold is 5 % and it depends upon the quality of the belt.

OPTIONAL CONFIG
Taring threshold
tthr=5.0 %

This value is given in % of the Maximum load of material on the belt (see appendix A3,
chapters 3 and 4).

OPTIONAL CONFIG
Maximum load
m.ld=xxxxx.xx kg/m

page 14/20 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a

During empty belt taring, if the belt load is higher than the taring threshold, the belt
taring will be stopped and the previous tare value of the empty belt will be remain valid.
A new taring will begin as soon as the belt is emptied.

EMPTY BELT TARING IN MANUAL MODE

If you prefer to tare manually instead of automatically, program a negative value in the
taring threshold. In this case, the belt is considered unloaded whenever the belt load is
less than the absolute value of the taring threshold.

Example :

If tthr = 5 %, taring will begin automatically whenever the load on the belt is less than 5
% of the maximum load.

If tthr = -5 %, taring must be started manually and the belt is considered to be unloaded
whenever the load is less than 5 % of the maximum load.

Carry out manual taring using the belt taring function :

FUNCTIONS
Belt taring

In case the belt is still loaded, the VHRS displays the message "Load too high" and
taring will be stopped. This message will also be desplayed during taring whenever the
load exceeds the threshold.

OPTIONAL CONFIG
Taring threshold
tthr=5.0%

Once the taring has started, the VHRS indicates the percentage of taring completed.

OPERATIONAL
% tare completed
tart=x.x %

CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a page 15/20

As soon as the taring is completed, it enables the VHRS to indicate the new average
belt weight :

METROLOGY
Current tare
tarc=x.x kg/m

BELT CHECKS MADE DURING TARING

To check whether the belt is empty, the VHRS uses the average weight calculated
during the Zero setting.

METROLOGY
Initial tare
tar0=xxx.x kg/m

To detect whether material is clogging the belt, the VHRS compares the average belt
weight to the average weight measured during the Zero setting. The difference is stored
in the Belt variation parameter.

METROLOGY
Belt variation
belt=x.x %

This is given as a percentage of the Maximum load. If this value is higher than the
Maximum tare parameter, the 03 BELT PROBLEM incident will be displayed.

METROLOGY
Maximum tare
maxt=3.0%

This incident indicates material is clogging the belt. Material clogging on the belt
causes inaccurate weight measurement.

After each taring, the average weight calculated is compared to the previous value. The
difference is stored in the Tare drift parameter.

METROLOGY
Tare drift
tard=x.x%

page 16/20 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a

Tare drift is given as a percentage of the Maximum load. If Tare drift is higher than the
Maximum drift parameter, the the 04 INSTABILITY incident will be displayed.

METROLOGY
Maximum drift
maxd=3.0%

This incident indicates that the weight measured is unstable. This can be due to poor
alignment of the weighbridge or to major variations of the belt tension.

2. SELECTING THE DISPLAY LANGUAGE
The VHRS displays messages in 3 different languages.
Program the selected display language as an OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Language
lang=1
Language :
French lang=0 If not otherwise specified, the display language
English lang=1 is English.
German lang=2 As a special option, German can be replaced by a
different language, for example Italian or Spanish.

3. NOMINAL SPEED
The nominal belt speed parameter is a reference parameter, used for the indication of
02 OVERSPEED incidents.

This incident occurs whenever the belt speed is 1.5 times higher than the nominal belt
speed.

The default value of nominal speed is 3 m/s. The controller automatically sets the
average speed value measured during the Zero setting.

If no speed sensor is used, program the nominal belt speed as an OPTIONAL

CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Nominal speed
noms=3.0 m/s

Whenever this parameter is changed the VHRS automatically recalculates the

Maximum load. Maximum load is equal to the Maximum flow divided by the Nominal
speed.

4. MAXIMUM FLOW
After Zero setting, the VHRS calculates the maximum belt scale flow rate automatically
based on the nominal load cell capacity.
Program the Maximum flow of the belt scale as an OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

A3-2/4 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a
OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Maximum flow
flwm=xxxxx t/h

The VHRS recalculates both the Scale intervals (see chapter 5 of this appendix) and
the Maximum load whenever the Maximum flow is modified. The Maximum load is equal
to the Maximum flow divided by the Nominal speed.

The Maximum load parameter is used to calculate the following reference thresholds :
Belt variation, High threshold, Maximum drift, Maximum tare, Tare drift, Low threshold
and Taring threshold.

5. SCALE INTERVALS
The VHRS displays the flow rate and the totalizer values in scale interval increments.
The sensitivity of the belt scale is defined by programming the most convenient size of
scale interval increments.

The VHRS can be programmed to display the flow rate variations and each totalizer
value in increments of 1, 2 or 5 multiples of 10.

For example, with a flow rate of 200 kg/h, the VHRS will display the flow rate variations
as follows, depending upon the programmed increment :
If flow increment incf=1 199, 200, 201, 202, 203...
If flow increment incf=0.1 199.9, 200.0, 200.1, 200.2...
If flow increment incf=2 198, 200, 202, 204...
If flow increment incf=20 180, 200, 220, 240...
If flow increment incf=5 195, 200, 205, 210...
If flow increment incf=0.5 199.5, 200.0, 200.5...
Decide upon the most convenient size scale interval increments for each of the
following and program them in METROLOGY CONFIGURATION.
Default value Unit
METROLOGY: Flow increment incf = flwn/200 t/h
METROLOGY: Eras. tot. incr inc0 = flwn/4000 kg
METROLOGY: Uner. tot. incr inc1 = flwn/400 kg
METROLOGY: Check tot. incr inc4 = flwn/500000 kg
METROLOGY: Tot ext. #1 incr inc2 = flwn/2000 kg
METROLOGY: Tot ext. #2 incr inc3 = flwn/4000 kg
The VHRS recalculates the internal totalizing interval as well as the flow intervals (incf,
inc0, inc1, and inc4) everytime the value of the Maximum flow changes. However the
external totalizing intervals (inc2 and inc3) are not changed when the maximum flow
changes.

CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a A3-3/4
6. THRESHOLD CONFIGURATION
The Low threshold parameter is a reference parameter, used for the indication of
01 UNDERLOAD incidents.
This incident occurs whenever the amount of material on the belt is less
than the Low threshold. When this occurs this indicator light begins
flashing.
Program the Low threshold as a percentage of the Maximum load as an OPTIONAL
CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Low threshold
lthr=0.0 %

The High threshold parameter is a reference parameter, used for the indication of
00 OVERLOAD incidents.
This incident occurs whenever the material flow rate is greater than the
High threshold. When this occurs this indicator light goes on
.
Program the High threshold as a percentage of the Maximum flow rate as an
OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
High threshold
hthr=100.0 %

7. ANALOG OUTPUT CONFIGURATION

The VHRS analog output provides a signal proportional to the flow rate. If not set
otherwise, the analog output current is 4 mA when the flow rate is zero and a 20 mA
when the flow rate is at its maximum.
Each of these anolog output values for the zero and maximum flow rate values can be
reprogrammed as an OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.

A5 CONFIGURABLE OPTIONS
The controller includes the following configurable options :

PRINTER, SPEED SENSOR, DEGRADED MODE, MODBUS PROTOCOL, ZERO

RESET OF THE TOTALIZATOR, PRESELECTION OF LOAD MODE.

The configuration of these special functions is obtained by using the parameter

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Configuration
conf=3

To use a printer : conf = 1

To work with the speed sensor : conf = 2
To use the MODBUS PROTOCOL : conf = 4
Automatic print on zero reset of the totalizator : conf = 8
To use a K-Tron printer with time stamp : conf = 16
Degraded mode : conf = 32
Function in preselection mode : conf = 64

Select the required special options by adding up the values corresponding to each of
the required options. Program the conf parameter with that value.

Examples :

- to use a printer : conf = 1

- to work with the speed sensor : conf = 2
- to use the MODBUS PROTOCOL : conf = 4
- to use a printer and to work with the speed sensor : conf = 1+2 = 3
- to work with the speed sensor and use the MODBUS PROTOCOL : conf = 2+4 = 6

The default value is conf = 3

If the configuration is erroneous, the incident 11 configuration appears.

(for ex : conf=5 printer + Modbus).

1. IF THE VHRS IS EQUIPPED WITH A PRINTER

If your VHRS is equipped with a printer, add up 1 to the configuration numbers : conf.
If no printer is configured, the RS232/422 interface may be used for the MODBUS
CONNECTION.

To use the printer, the jumper JU6 must be open. (see A1-4/4).
A dedicated manuel is delivered with this option.

CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a A5-1/4
2. WORKING WITH A SPEED SENSOR
If the belt scale is working with a speed sensor, add up 2 to the configuration numbers :
conf.
The VHRS is usually equipped with a speed sensor. However, if the belt speed is stable
enough, it is possible to use the belt scale without measuring the speed. In that case,
an input is required to check whether the belt is moving. The first digital input (JP1,
terminals 7 and 9) is used for this function (Belt moving = a current circulates between
terminals 7 and 9).

When the belt scale is run without a speed sensor, the VHRS assumes that the belt
runs constantly at the nominal speed.

Program the Nominal speed as an OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Nominal speed
noms=2.0 m/s

3. MODBUS PROTOCOL
If your VHRS uses a MODBUS PROTOCOL, add up 4 to the configuration numbers :
conf.

The jumper JU6 must be configured as per type of support RS232/RS422. (see A1-4/4)

A dedicated manuel is delivered with this option.

4. ZERO RESET OF THE TOTALIZATOR

When this option is set, the VHRS automatically resets the totalizator to zero after each
printing.

This option must only be configured if the VHRS is equipped with a printer.

5. DEGRADED FUNCTIONING
If the speed sensor is suspected to be functioning incorrectly, it is possible to use the
speed sensor to determine only if the belt is moving. In this case the controller assumes
that the speed is constant and equal to the nominal speed.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Nominal speed
noms=2.0 m/s

A5-2/4 CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a
6. FUNCTION IN PRESELECTION MODE
If the VHRS is used in preselection mode, the reactions are different so as to meet the
needs of commercial use of the scale.

RESETTING THE TOTALIZATOR TO ZERO.

The totalizator can only be set to zero if the preselection has been terminated. To
determine if the preselection is terminated, the controller checks that the following
conditions are satisfied :

• If the flow and the total integration are calculated at the belt's discharge point
(parameter p.vi not equal to 0), the controller verifies that the belt is stopped or that
the load between the weighbridge and the discharge point is null.

• If the flow and the total integration are calculated on the weighbridge, the controller
verifies that the belt has made at least one revolution with no load.

During printing, the totalizator is not reset to zero immediately after printing but only
when the belt is restarted. This allows the user to verify the correctness of the printing
of the results at the end of preselection.

The VHRS is a measuring device. In preselection mode, the VHRS only provides
information necessary for the system. The organization of the preselection (selection of
the load, stopping and starting up of the belt, printing requests, etc...) must be achieved
by external means. A typical installation is shown below:

Start
preselection

&

Belt
ready (jp1.3) reset
VHRS motor
start
tot1 (jp1.2) motor
counter stop
print (jp1.8) controller
88888.88

count. = 0

An external preselection counter must be used to determine the end of the load. When
this counter has counted down to zero, the belt motor is stopped and printing of the
result is launched. When printing is finished, a new load can be started by reloading the
set point in the counter and restarting the belt.

CONTVHRS.940.001-E.a A5-3/4
OUTPUT PRESELECTION READY.

In preselection mode, the second totalizator output (connection JP1 terminal 3) is

reassigned. In this mode, this second output indicates that the VHRS is ready to start a
new load.

Preselection finished

Speed

Ready (JP1.3)

Print (JP1.8)

Request to print Printing finished

The VHRS is ready for
the next load

When the belt speed falls to zero, indicating that the preselection is finished, the VHRS
deactivates the output "Ready" (jp1.3). This output is reactivated when the result of the
preselection has been printed.

05 WGT-SENSOR 0X The weight sensor X cannot measure the weight. Two
possible reasons are either a weight sensor breakdown or
the communication cable between the VHRS and the
weighing station is defective.

A9 BELT SCALE CALIBRATION
1. CALIBRATION USING CHAINS
Calibration using chains with a known weight per meter enables the VHRS to take the
dynamic effect of the belt into account.

The weight of the chains must be at least equal to 25 % of the Maximum load.

The totalization measured is compared to the theoretical totalization correspoding to the

known weight of the chains.

This calibration method is not recommended for inclined conveyors.

Procedure :

Unload the belt.

Program the weight per meter of the chains.

METROLOGY
Calibration load
chai=0.0 kg/m

Place the chain in a straight line along the belt. The chain must extend over at least two
stations on each side of the weighbridge.

Weighing station

The VHRS totalizes a length of belt equal to the length of empty belt taring.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.

Then start the function :

FUNCTION
Calibration

During this calibration the VHRS displays the percentage of taring completed :

OPERATIONAL
% tare completed
tart=x.x %

As soon as the calibration is completed the VHRS compares the totalization measured
(tota) with the theoretical total (tarl x chai) and calculates the new coefficient (new_coeff).

tarl x chai
new_ coeff = coeff x
tota

If no correction is needed, the coefficient coef = 100 %.

If this new coefficient (new_coeff) is greater than the maximum acceptable correction
(maxc), it will be rejected and the old value (coef) will be restored. In this cas the
message

Coef out of lim is displayed

The default value of the Maximum correction is 10 % and can be displayed as an

OPTIONAL CONFIGURATION.

OPTIONAL CONFIG.
Maximum corr
maxc=10.0 %

If maxc = 10 %, the coefficient coef will be accepted between 90 % and 110 %.

When calibrating has been completed and an acceptable coefficient has been
calculated, it will be displayed for 4 seconds : coef = .... %

3. Turn on the conveyor.

4. Load a quantity of material on the belt corresponding to the nominal flow rate for at
least one belt revolution.

5. Weigh the material and the result to Check totalizer (totc) value.

6. Calculate the calibration coefficient (coef) :

3. LINEAR EQUALIZER OF THE SCALE

The linear equalizer of the scale corrects the non-linear effects linked to the weighing
system as well as the belt.

A table of parameters called LINEARIZATION allows four measurement points to be

introduced on the load cells span. For each point, the real load must be introduced, as
well as the measured load. These points define four segments.

Once these points have been introduced, the VHRS automatically corrects the
measurement according to the linear equalizing segment in which the current load falls.
