 proves statements on triangle congruence. (M8GEIIIh-1)

II. Key Concepts

This activity sheet focused proving two triangles that are congruent
and statements in triangle congruence using SAS, ASA, SSS and AAS.
Below are the activities with regard to this topic. Read the directions of
every activity and answer what is asked.

III. Activity

Day 1: Proving Two Triangles Congruent using SAS and ASA Postulates

SAS Postulate: If two sides and the included angle of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding parts of another triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.

Y
If SI ≅ EY, ∠I ≅ ∠Y and MI ≅ LY,
then ΔSIM ≅ ΔLYE by SAS
Postulate.

Included angle is the angle formed by two given sides. In the diagram, ∠ I
is the included angle of sides SI and MI while ∠Y is the included angle of
sides LY and EY .

ASA Postulate: If two angles and the included side of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding parts of another triangle, then
the triangles are congruent.

If ∠ I ≅∠Y , SI ≅ EY and ∠ S ≅ ∠ E ,
then ΔSIM ≅ ΔLYE by ASA Postulate.

Day 3-4: Proving Statements on Triangle Congruence

In geometry we use proofs to show something is true. They are special

form of argument in which you have to justify every step of the argument
with a reason. Valid reasons are definitions, properties, postulates and
theorems.

Two-Column Proof

One way to organize your thoughts when writing a proof is to use a

two-column proof. This probably is the most common kind of proof in
geometry, and it has two columns with a specific format;
• In the left column you write statements that lead to what to prove.
• In the right column, you write reasons for each step you take.
• Most proofs start with the “given” information and
• The conclusion is the statement you are trying to prove.

Congruent Triangles.

If two triangles have 3 corresponding sides and 3 corresponding

angles that are congruent, then they are said to be congruent triangles.

The parts of congruent triangles that “match” is called

corresponding parts.

Amelita N. Tupaz
Mabuhay National High School
DepEd Division of Agusan del Sur
amelita.tupaz@deped.gov.ph
Key to remember. When you are creating a proof, you list the
information that are given, list any other information you can deduce, and
then whatever it is you are trying to prove.

While congruent triangle proofs can be little challenging, here is the basic 3-
step method to use to set them up.

3 Steps to a Proof
1. Mark the given information to the diagram.
2. Identify the congruence postulate/ theorem to be used and
the additional information needed and why.
3. Write down the statements and reasons. Make sure your last
statement is what you are supposed to be proving.

Congruence Statement

In a congruence statement, order matters. Every part should be

matched to the other.

Example 1: ΔYNA ≅ ΔJOB

Corresponding parts of congruent triangles are congruent (CPCTC)

YN ≅ JO or YN = JO
NA ≅ OB or NA = OB
YA ≅ JB or YA = JB
∠Y ≅ ∠J or m∠Y = m∠J
∠N ≅ ∠O or m∠N = m∠O
∠A ≅ ∠B or m∠A = m∠B

Let us try to prove statements on triangle congruence.

Example 2. Given: O is the midpoint of AC and BD, AB ≅ DC

Prove: ΔAOB ≅ ΔCOD

Amelita N. Tupaz
Mabuhay National High School
DepEd Division of Agusan del Sur
amelita.tupaz@deped.gov.ph
Solution: Proof:
Statement Reason
1. O is the midpoint AC and BD 1. Given
2. AO ≅ CO, BO ≅ DO 2. Definition of Midpoint
3. AB ≅ DC 3. Given
4. ΔAOB ≅ ΔCOD 4. SSS Congruence Postulate

Example 3: Given: OM is a bisector of ∠SOE and

∠S ≅ ∠E
Prove: M is the midpoint of SE

Solution: Plan: For a point to be a midpoint of a segment, the new segments

formed two equal parts. Thus, in the figure we need to prove that
SM ≅ EM. Since the two segments are corresponding parts of
ΔOSM and ΔOEM, we need to prove their congruency. An angle
bisector divides the angle into two congruent parts.

Proof:

Statement Reason
1.OM is a bisector of ∠SOE 1. Given
2. ∠SOM ≅ ∠EOM 2. Definition of Angle Bisector
3. ∠S ≅ ∠E 3. Given
4. ΔSOE is an Isosceles triangle 4. Definition of Isosceles triangle
4. SO ≅ EO 4. Converse of Isosceles Triangle
Theorem
5. ΔOSM ≅ ΔOEM 5. ASA Postulate
6. SM ≅ EM 6. CPCTC
6. M is the midpoint of SE 6. Definition of Midpoint

Prove: LE ≅ NO

Amelita N. Tupaz
Mabuhay National High School
DepEd Division of Agusan del Sur
amelita.tupaz@deped.gov.ph
Proof:
Statement Reason
1.GL ≅ GN, ∠GLE ≅ ∠GNO 1. Given
2. ∠LGE ≅ ∠NGO 2. Reflexive Property
3. ΔGLE ≅ ΔGNO 3. ASA Postulate
4. LE ≅ NO 4. CPCTC

Example 5: Given: GV ≅ NV and ∠G ≅ ∠N

Prove: ∠I ≅ ∠E

Proof:
Statement Reason
1.GV ≅ NV, ∠G ≅ ∠N 1. Given
2. ∠GVI ≅ ∠NVE 2. Vertical angle Theorem
3. ΔGVI ≅ ΔNVE 3. ASA Postulate
4. ∠I ≅ ∠E 4. CPCTC
