ESTABLISHING THE YVE KENYA CHAPTER

Terms of Reference for Volunteering with Jeunes Volontaires pour l’Environnement (JVE
International)

General Information

Position Title: Volunteer Coordinator (Coordination and Organization)

Location: c/ PELUM Kenya, Juja

Duration: 6 – 12 months (exact reporting time varies with recruitment process)

Supervisor: Sena Alouka, Executive Director

Background Information

JVE International is a nonprofit, youth led, non-governmental, environmental organization


which was formed in November 2001 in Kpele Tsiko, Togo. Currently JVE has grown to have
over 36 local branches in Togo and National Representations in up to 27 countries in Africa
with 15 registered and fully functioning offices and very strong groups in the rest of the
countries; and 3 other countries outside Africa.

JVE’s mission is to develop leadership and eco-citizenship of young people for their
involvement in promoting the sustainable development of communities. And as such, JVE has
initiated several projects under the strategic axes i. Energy-Climate-Development ii.
Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Community Development iii. Citizen
Engagement.

Job Description

The goal of this opportunity is to reorganize and reactivate the YVE Kenya chapter. The
position will be based in Juja Kenya, hosted by PELUM Kenya a partner organization to JVE,
and will have local, regional, or national reach and impact in Kenya.

Since its creation, JVE has sought to mobilize young people in Africa for action at local, national
and regional level for inclusive and sustainable development of African communities. Through
the National Representations, JVE ensures that its ambitions to make young people change-
makers across the world, would be achieved thanks to the collaborative efforts of its partners
and networks.

As part of its mission to involve youth in the sustainable development process, it is very
important for JVE to continually seek young people from around the globe to join in the efforts
to protect the environment, restore nature and preserve our natural resources.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Volunteer

1. Vision creation and execution


• Develop and actualize YVE Kenya revival plan supported by JVE international and its
partners.
• Develop, implement and monitor projects within the region (Kenya) while liaising with
the JVE international team based in Lome, Togo.
• Develop and streamline communication strategy between JVE international, YVE
Kenya executive board, and the partners stakeholders.
2. Youth Mobilization
• Organize General Constitutive Assembly of YVE Kenya
• Set up Board of Directors
• Facilitate joint material development, policy papers and operational documents and
further develop research in the field of energy.
3. Partner and resource Mobilization
• Assist in partners’ and stakeholders’ mapping to support the fund-raising needs of YVE
Kenya chapter.

• Design fund raising proposals in line with the JVE International and YVE Kenya thematic
areas.
4. Obtain official recognition
• Assist the Board in reconstituting and revision of the YVE Kenya legal documents
(Constitution, codes of conduct…etc)
• Satisfy legal requirements for the organization according to the country laws and
regulations

Qualifications and Experience

• Graduate in Project Management, Languages/literature, Environmental Studies, Social


Sciences and Mass Communication, Public/International Relations, Political science or
any other relevant field;
• Ability to lead a team with excellent communication skills and demonstrated flexibility
• Good advocacy and management skills
• Proficiency in English with good writing skills (basic knowledge of French is an added
advantage)
• Knowledge on global policy
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• Preferably a Kenyan citizen

Learning Expectations

Upon completion of the task the volunteer will be able to:-

• Work with National and International organizations and similar settings;


• Networking freely
• Develop project proposals and resource mobilization material
• Coordinate meetings/workshops etc. and organize the relevant follow up
• Carry out online research and manage data information
