Module 5 Shear and Moment in Indeterminate Beams 1
Module 5 Shear and Moment in Indeterminate Beams 1
Module 5 Shear and Moment in Indeterminate Beams 1
In this module, we will study the types of statically indeterminate beams. Also in this module, we
will draw the shear and moment diagrams of statically indeterminate beams and determine the maximum
bending moment and maximum shear force.
Module Outcomes:
CO3: Draw the shear and moment diagrams.
When the number of unknown reaction components exceeds three and the three equilibrium
equations are insufficient for determining the unknown reaction components.
1. Propped Cantilever Beam. It is a beam that is fixed at one end and simply supported at the other end.
3. Continuous Beam. A continuous beam is supported on a hinge support and two or more roller
supports.

Solution:
Follow the steps used on how to draw the shear and
moment diagrams of statically determinate beams
(Module 2).
Shear Force

6m – X = 6 – 3.063 = 2.937 m
Bending Moment
MA = – 31.26 KN-m
MX = – 31.26 + ½ (30.63) (3.063 m) = 15.65 KN-m
MB = 15.65 – ½ (29.37) (2.937 m) = – 27.48 KN-m
MC = – 27.48 + (17.49) (3 m) = 24.99 KN-m
MD = 24.99 – (12.51) (2 m) = – 0.03 say 0
