STEERING CONTROL SYSTEM

USE AND PURPOSES

Helm-It’s a critical component of any ship or boat. Refers to the steering mechanism that changes rudders
direction.

Steering stand- All steering systems involve sending rudder command signals from the position where
the vessel is navigated to the steering gear compartment where the machinery for controlling rudder
movement is located.
Starter- It is a motor in which to start/stop the steering power to run.
Hydraulic pump- A crucial role in generating the required pressure to create motions in the steering
gear which can trigger the necessary rotary moments in the rudder system.
4-way valve-The rotation of the steering wheel causes the torsion bar to twist relative to the pinion.
The deformation of the bar is transformed into opening of the 4-way valve, which connects the
chambers of the cylinder to pressure or return lines depending upon the direction of rotation.
Ram- hydraulic steering system used primarily on ships to control their rudders, ensuring efficient
navigation and maneuverability most important part of a hydraulic steering system. To ensure proper
and precise operation, choose an appropriate steering ram for your application.

Bypass valve-Bypass valves are normally closed but can be opened on two cylinder gear to allow
for the use of emergency steering. One pair of cylinder can be bypassed on a four cylinders –
gears while the other pair of cylinders provide emergency steering at reduced torque
Ships steering gear control-To control the navigation direction of a vessel and change the navigation
direction through manual steering or automatically controlled steering.
Ships steering gear rams & cylinders-These cylinders are directly coupled to electrically driven
hydraulic pumps which generate hydraulic pressure through pipes.
Rudder- Is a tool that gives the ship directional control and a way to steer so that it can navigate. This
is accomplished by directing water flow as effectively and with as little resistance as possible to not
compromise the vessel’s efficiency.
