SCREW THREAD MEASUREMENT

Learning Outcome LO3 Measure the performance of a measurement system.

(LO):
Program Outcome: PO5 Ability to select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and
modern engineering tools, with an understanding of their limitations.
Synopsis: Theses lab activities expose students in practical on how to measure all six (6)
basic dimensions of screw thread: major diameter, minor diameter, thread length,
thread angle, pitch and pitch diameter. Students will work in team basis. They
have to assign their member to complete the tasks. Upon completion of the
tasks, students can identify the metric of screw thread by referring to Standard
Metric Table of Screw Thread.

1.0 THEORY

Screw thread is used for fastening two parts and for transmit force or motion. There are six basic
elements in identifying screw threads as follows :
1. Thread Pitch
2. Hand of The Thread
3. Major Diameter
4. Minor Diameter
5. Pitch Diameter
6. Angles of thread

Errors in screw threads can arise during its manufacture or storage. These errors may be in:
1. Major Diameter
2.Minor Diameter
3. Angle
4.Pitch

There are three common standards are used in identifying thread:

1. Metric standards
2.Unified (inch) standards
3.British/English (inch) standards

There are two kinds of ISO metric threads: coarse and fine. Fine metric threads are designated by
the letter M followed by the nominal major diameter of the thread and the pitch in millimeters. For
example, M10 x 1.0 indicates that the major diameter of the thread is 10 mm and the pitch is 1.0 mm.
Coarse metric threads have not indicated the pitch value. For example, stating that a thread is M10
indicates a coarse thread series is specified of diameter 10 mm (giving the thread a pitch of 1.5mm).

The number of pitch (Np) can be identified by using the formula below:

Np = Thread length / Pitch

3.0 PROCEDURES/ METHODOLOGY

3.1 Planning for Data Collections

i. The group has to take two (2) types of screws (i.e. small and big screw), ONE (1) part for each type.

ii. Decide the equipments that can be used to measure the screw thread basic dimensions accordingly.

*** Remark: one dimension for maximum two equipments.

iii. Decide number of trials for each dimension.

*** Remark: minimum 5 trials.

iv. Draft the recording format.

v. Assign personnel to do the measurement.

*** Remark: one dimension for each personnel.

3.2 Measurement Process

i. The assigned person has to do the calibration / verification before taking data.

ii. Record the calibration result.

iii. Do the measurement for the required dimension using appropriate instrument?

iv. Record the data.

3.3 Identification of Metric Standard of Screw Thread

i. Refer to provided Table of Metric Standard of Screw Thread.

ii. Write down the metric system for each screw.

3.4 Data Analysis

i. Calculate number of pitch of the small and big screws.

ii. Calculate Uncertainty Type A for each dimensions, for each screw type.

Note down the result in the table provided in appendix

5.0 DISCUSSION

i. The results of lab activities shall be discussed as follows:

ii. What is the measuring instrument that able to measure all the screw thread dimensions?

iii. Discuss the importance of the pitch diameter as compared to major and minor diameters.

iv. Compare and comments on Uncertainty Type A between larger and smaller screws based on the
result for each dimension.

v. How can Type A uncertainty be minimized?

6.0 CONCLUSION

Have you achieved the objective (Learning outcome) of this experiment?

Please elaborate the details.
