Each question has FOUR options (A), (B), (C) and (D). ONLY ONE of these four options is correct.
For each question, select the alphabet corresponding to the correct option provided below the
questions.
Marking scheme:
+3 If only the alphabet corresponding to the correct option is selected.
0 If none of the alphabets are selected.

1. A ball of mass m collides another identical ball at rest obliquely as in figure. If velocity of 2nd ball
after the collision is 6m/s, then the value of coefficient of restitution is :

1) 1
2)

3)

4)

Ans: 2 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 1

Solution: By momentum conservation along line of impact,

m × 8 = m × v1 + m × 6
⇒ v1 = 2 m/s

2. A hemispherical shell of radius R is capped on a vertical hollow cone of base radius R and height

(as in an ice cream cone). Both the cone and the shell have the same mass per unit area. Find
the distance of the center of mass of the system from the vertex of the cone.
1)

2)

3)

2/26
4)

Ans: 4 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 1

Solution: Mass of shell (m ) = σ(2πR 2)

Mass of cone (m2) = σπRℓ

x is distance of COM(System) from m1

Distance of COM(System) from vertex of cone

3. A body of mass 4 kg is acted on by a force which varies as shown in the graph below. The
momentum acquired is

1) 280 N–s
2) 140 N–s
3) 70 N–s
4) 210 N–s
Ans: 3 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 1
Solution:
Momentum acquired = Area (Δ↑ ) = 5 × 10 + = 50 + 20 = 70 N-s

Ans: 3 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 1
Solution: At the highest point and lowest point the component of normal reaction between M and m in
the horizontal is zero. But in between these points, normal reaction in the horizontal
direction was non-zero.That means normal reaction in horizontal direction first increases
then decreases and so the acceleration of mass ‘M’.

Ans: 4 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 1
Solution: Height moved by particle in 1 sec

After 1 sec vertical speed

vy = 20 – 10 × 1
vy = 10 m/s

Velocity before explosion

4/26
Momentum conservation just before and after explosion

A shell is fired vertically upward with a speed of 60 m/s. When it is at maximum height, it explodes
into large number of fragments. Assume that the fragments fly in every possible direction and all
6/26
of them have same initial speed of 25 m/s.

2)
3) 10 m/s
4) Zero
Ans: 3 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 0
Solution:
Maximum height =
At the time of explosion velocity of centre of mass will be zero.
So the speed after 1 sec equals to 10 m/s down wards.
for minimum time : Any one fragment which has initial velocity 25 m/s downwards will take
minimum time to reach at ground, so

∴ –180 = –25t –
t = 4 sec

1) 4 sec
2) 6 sec
3) 2 sec
4) 11 sec
Ans: 1 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 0
Solution:
Maximum height =
At the time of explosion velocity of centre of mass will be zero.
So the speed after 1 sec equals to 10 m/s down wards.
for minimum time : Any one fragment which has initial velocity 25 m/s downwards will take
minimum time to reach at ground, so

∴ –180 = –25t –
t = 4 sec

Momentum of a system is a conserved quantity. It remains conserved as energy whether external

forces are present or not. If external forces are absent the total momentum of system of particles
remain constant. If external forces are acting on a system, still the momentum of system remains
conserved.
From Newton’s IInd law :
If constant force F acts for a time, then ∆p = F∆t

If a variable force acts for a time t;

∫ dp =Initial momentum + momentum imparted = Final momentum

If applied force is opposite to the direction of v1 then we have mv1 – Ft = mv2

1) u 2) 2u 3) u/2 4) 3u/4
Ans: 1 Marks: 3 Negative Marks: 0
Solution: As the boy jumps vertically up w.r.t. the trolley, the impulsive force is vertical and it has no
horizontal component, so the speed of trolley remains same.

(R) Minimum momentum is (3) mv sinθ
Magnitude of change in
(S) momentum between point of (4)
projection and highest point

Solution:

(P)

(P-2)

(Q) At highest point :

Thus, at highest point : vp = vcosθ
P = mv
Pmin = mvcosθ (R-3)

(S)

= mvcosθ – (mvcosθ + mvsinθ )

ΔP = –mvsinθ
|ΔP| = mvsinθ (S-3)

3) P → 2,Q → 3,R → 4,S → 1
4) P → 4,Q → 2,R → 3,S → 1

(Since no external force is exists)
8vA = 1 × vB
8vA = vB

vA = 1 m/s
vB = 8 m/s
m/s
m/s
