ILO one:
 How are the various psychopathological signs and symptoms mentioned in the history and mental
state examination of the case?
 What is meant by mood and what is meant by affect?
 Difference between unipolar, bipolar I, bipolar II?
ILO two:
 Describe the predisposing, triggering and sustaining factors for unipolar mood disorders.
 Describe the differential diagnosis in unipolar mood disorders (co-occurrence with somatic
disorder; co-occurrence with use of/withdrawal from psychoactive agents; anxiety disorders;
dementia; schizophrenia; bipolar mood disorders; personality disorders; grief response, burnout).

SUICIDE:
 What is meant by suicidal behavior?
 Name the major risk factors for suicide.
 Describe the legal method / possibility for a compulsory admission in KSA.

Neurobiology Of Unipolar And Bipolar Mood Disorders
 Pharmacology of serotonin, noradrenaline, Dopamine (precursors, synthesis, breakdown,
receptors).
 Describe the relationship between a disrupted HPA axis and the development of depression.
ILO Five:
Neurobiology Of Unipolar And Bipolar Mood Disorders
 Describe neurotransmitters and the brain structures/neurocircuits possibly involved in bipolar
disorder.
ILO Six:
Treatment Of Unipolar Mood Disorders – Pharmacological
 Knowledge about antidepressants (SSRI, TCA, MAO) mechanism of action.
 Contraindications and side effects?
ILO Seven:
Treatment Of Unipolar Mood Disorders – Psychological
 Describe the non-pharmacological treatment options for depression (e.g. IPT vs. CBT)
ILO Eight:
Treatment Of Bipolar Disorders – Pharmacological
 Discuss the various mood stabilizers briefly in terms of indications and mechanism of actions and
side effects.
