INTRODUCTION
FINISHES:
A series of treatments are given in mills to finish textiles goods, for example: a fabric
is washed, bleached, dyed or printed, starched and ironed before it is sent to the
market. When a fabric is given a finish, it is known as a finished textile. But it is not a
must that all the textile-products are finished before use. When no finish is applied
on the textiles, these are termed as gray goods or unfinished textiles. This does not
mean that the fabric is gray in colour. It implies that no finishing treatment has been
given to it. Grey goods lack customer appeal and you will not like to buy these for
your dress or shirt. It is because in the absence of any finish, fabrics have dull and
shabby appearance. Different colours or prints on fabrics are also finishes and these
make fabrics look attractive.
Textile finishes are important because of the following reasons. The finishes help to:
● improve the appearance of fabric and enhance its looks
● improve the feel or touch of fabric
● improve the draping ability of light weight fabrics
● make fabric suitable for an end (specific) use.
Softening finish: Softening finishes like napping, brushing and raising alter the
surface texture of fabrics to create special effects and enhance its softness. It
involves mechanically brushing the fabric surface to raise the fibres and create a
softer texture by rapidly rotating rollers or brushes covered with fine wire bristles.
Although the fabric becomes soft, it loses its strength, weight, durability and
becomes prone to pilling. There can also be a change in shade of the fabric.
This finish is applied to kids wear to give it more softness to make it feel more
comfortable against the babies skin
Antimicrobial finish: Antimicrobial finishes for textiles are designed to inhibit the
proliferation of microorganisms on the fabric surface or to kill them. This property can
be beneficial in reducing odours, discolouration and the potential for infection in
certain settings. This finish can be incorporated into the fabric fibres or deposited on
the surface. Common antimicrobial agents used include silver ions, quaternary
ammonium compounds and zinc. The efficacy of antimicrobial fabrics may vary
depending on the antimicrobial agent and concentration used, the fabric's
construction, and the finish's adhesion.
Wash and wear finish: The goal of a wash and wear finish is to reduce the need for
special care or ironing after washing, making garments more convenient for
consumers. It allows these textiles to withstand washing and drying without
significant wrinkling. Garments with this finish typically require no or very light
ironing. It makes them easy to care for and maintain since they possess the quality
of both dry crease resistance and wet crease resistance although there is a little loss
in comfort and strength of the fabric.
Soil release finish: A textile finish that is designed to make the fabrics more
resistant to dirt and stains, while also making them easier to clean. This is achieved
by increasing the surface tension of the garment, which results in a decrease in the
rate at which the stain is absorbed by the garment. The soil release finish is
particularly suitable for garments and other fabrics that come into contact with dirt,
stains or other contaminants during everyday use.
Flame-retardant finish: Flame retardants are chemicals that have the ability to slow
down the spread of a fire when used in clothing, fabrics, cushions, toys, electronics
and other items. Fire safety standards require that certain consumer products pass a
flammability test. Children have more contact with chemicals in products in their
home due to their frequent hand-to-mouth activity. Children may also be affected
more because of their smaller size, and developing organs.
