compressive strength was evaluated on cubical
specimens and flexural strength was evaluated
on beam samples at 7, 14, and 28 days,
respectively. Results showed that the
compressive strength and flexural strength of the
concretes increased with an increase in the
curing age. Also, the compressive and flexural
strengths of cement concrete were recorded by
65.38 MPa and 10.86 MPa at 0% bagasse ash or
fibre, which performed better than concrete
replaced with 5% and 10% bagasse ash and fibre
at 28 days, respectively. Besides, the compressive
strength of concrete was noted by 53.85 MPa and
48.92 MPa at 10% bagasse ash and
10% bagasse fibre, respectively, while the
flexural strength was calculated by 6.86 MPa and
5.54 MPa at 10% bagasse ash and
10% bagasse fibre, respectively, which were
higher than that of concrete produced with
hydrated lime alone at 28 days.
Thus, bagasse ash performed better
than bagasse fibre ash as a partial replacement of
cement or hydrated lime in concrete production.
Therefore, Costus
englerianus bagasse ash or bagasse fibre improved
the performance of hydrated lime concrete at 5–
10% replacement, but higher concrete strength
would be obtained in cement replacement than
hydrated lime.

properties include mechanical (compressive
strength, split tensile strength), and durability
(initial surface absorption, ultrasonic pulse
velocity, and sulphate attack). Additionally, to
analyze the practical usability of the SCBA-based
concrete, analytical evaluations such as cost
estimation, global warming potential, statistical
analysis, and the linear relationship between the
parameters have been carried out. In comparison
to the control mix, the experimental results
showed that a 10% substitution of SCBA for
NFA significantly improved compressive
strength (14.1%), split tensile strength (24.05%),
ultrasonic pulse velocity (0.52%), initial surface
absorption (19.2%), and resistance to sulphate
attack (11.5%). In addition, the analytical
evaluation showed a significant reduction in the
concrete production cost and a negligible
increase in global warming potential. The
statistical analysis and mathematical relationship
showed a statistically significant difference in the
compressive strength at different curing ages and
a strong relationship between the compressive
strength and other parameters of SCBA-based
concrete. On the other hand, seven machine
learning (ML) models (linear regression, artificial
neural network, K-nearest neighbor, K-star,
decision tree, support vector machine, and
additive regressor) were considered to predict the
compressive strength of SCBA-based concrete
produced by replacing NFA content. The
performance of these models has been evaluated
using errors, correlation coefficients, and
sensitivity analysis. In addition, scatter plots, box
and whisker plots, histograms, and correlation
matrices are used to visualize the available
datasets. The results of the artificial intelligence
approach revealed that the additive regressor
model performed well compared to other
models, with the highest coefficient (0.95) and
minimal errors in predicting compressive
strength.

concentration of immobilized bacteria is
investigated, and its performance is evaluated
based on the strength and durability
characteristics. The experimentation includes
bagasse ash (< 45µ) and fly ash (Class C) in
proportions partially blended with cement.
External loads are stimulated to assess the
mechanical properties of concrete. Rapid
chloride penetration test of the concrete before
the induction of cracks is also performed. By
comparing the compression test results, the
microbial concrete of 105cells/mg shows greater
compressive strength when compared with the
microbial concrete of 107cells/mg and also with
the conventional concrete. SEM analysis and
compression test results reveal 15% fly ash
additives have accomplished microbial concrete.
And also the test results indicate the potential of
encapsulation using clay pellets and silica gel.

SCBA, the effect of calcining temperature on
bagasse ash, its physical and chemical
characteristics and the strength development
phenomenon are discussed. The impact of SCBA
on the properties of concrete under the fresh state
is also discussed. The physical and durability
properties of concrete manufactured with SCBA
are reviewed in-depth to understand its
impending use for commercial applications.
Finally, SCBA-related issues and challenges are
described. A few of the outcomes are: (i) An
organized incineration method is required for
producing good quality SCBA, (ii) the optimum
replacement level of cement by SCBA for
mechanical and durability properties are 20%,
(iii) improved durability due to an impervious
microstructure of SCBA-concrete to harmful
agents that cause degradation. Even though there
is some disagreement among researchers, the
majority continue to agree that using SCBA in
cementitious composites is advantageous.
However, researchers do not consider its usage
in reinforced concrete elements such as slabs and
beams; thus, further research is recommended.
Finally, the formulation of codal
recommendations on technical and
environmental factors calls for additional
research.

changing the proportions of SBA and BFS (i.e.,
10%, 20%, and 30%) in blended systems; and
their performance was investigated. Test results
showed that the presence of amorphous silica
was detected for the processed SBA, revealing
that the strength activity index was above 80%.
The compressive strength of SCC containing
SBA (without BFS) could reach 98%–127% of

mix exhibited the lowest risk of corrosion.
Moreover, the joint use of SBA and BFS
enhanced significantly the SCC’s sulfate
resistance. Finally, a hyperbolic formula for
interpolating the compressive strength of the
SBA-based SCC was proposed and validated
with error range estimated within ±10%.

aggregates (RA) were created by crushing 4-
month-old UHPC specimens with an average
compressive strength of 150 MPa. Different
fractions of recycled aggregates (0 to 2 mm) and
two different percentages (50 and 100%) were
used as a substitute for natural aggregates in the
production of R-UHPC. Notched beam
specimens were pre-cracked to 150 ym using a
three-point flexural test. The autogenous self-
healing potential of R-UHPC, stimulated by the
addition of a crystalline admixture, was explored
using water absorption tests and microscopic
crack healing at a pre-determined time (0 days, 1
month, 3 months, and 6 months) following pre-
cracking. Continuous wet/ dry healing
conditions were maintained throughout the
experimental campaign. The specimens using R-
UHPC aggregates demonstrated improved self-
healing properties to those containing natural
aggregates, especially from the second to the
sixth month. To address the potential
environmental benefits of this novel material in
comparison to the conventional ones, an LCA
analysis was conducted adopting the 10 CML-IA
baseline impact categories, together with a life
cycle cost (LCC) analysis to determine the
related economic viability. Both LCA and LCC
methodologies are integrated into a holistic
design approach to address not only the
sustainability concerns but also to promote the
spread of innovative solutions for the concrete
construction industry. As a case study unit, a
basin for collection and cooling of geothermal
waters was selected. This is representative of
both the possibility offered, in terms of structural
design optimization and reduction of resource
consumption, and of reduced maintenance
guaranteed by the retained mechanical
performance and durability realized by the self-
healing capacity of R-UHPC.

Hydration heat evaluation, X-ray diffraction
(XRD), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and
mercury injection (MIP) were applied to reveal
the effects of SCBA on cement hydration,
hydration products and pore structure. The
results indicate that the application of SCBA in
UHPC as a cement replacement not only
maintains the compressive strength but also
improves the workability and decreases the
autogenous shrinkage of UHPC paste.
Compared to the control group, UHPC prepared
at a 40% replacement rate obtained a good
comprehensive performance. Autogenous
shrinkage decreased by 24.48%, and the
compressive strength was almost the same as
that of the control group. This study verifies the
technical feasibility of SCBA application as a
cement replacement in UHPC and may further
promote the utilization of agricultural
byproducts in cementitious materials.
