1. What is a rectifier?
A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current to direct current by
using one or more P-N junction diodes. A diode is a one-way valve that only allows
current to travel in one direction. The process is known as a correction. Rectifiers
include solid-state diodes, vacuum tube diodes, mercury-arc valves, silicon-controlled
rectifiers, and a wide range of additional silicon-based semiconductor switches.

2. Cite applications of diodes.

Diodes are used to limit voltage and convert AC to DC, as well as to protect circuits.
Semiconductors like silicon and germanium are employed to get the most out of diodes.
Despite the fact that they both send current in the same direction, their methods differ.
Diodes are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, each with its own set of uses.
The most common and important application of a diode is to convert AC power to DC
electricity. Diodes can be used to create a variety of rectifier circuits. The most popular
types of rectifier circuits are half-wave, full-wave center-tapped, and full-bridge rectifier
circuits. A single or a set of four diodes is employed in most power conversion
applications.
3. Looking at the datasheet, find the Maximum forward current and reverse breakdown
voltage of 1N4001 and 1N4003 Diode. Make snapshot of the datasheet parameter to
prove
4.

5. Answer item 2 considering the Diode Drop (0.7V).

6.What is PIV of a diode in a rectifier circuit?

PIV stands for peak inverse voltage, which is the highest voltage that can be applied
across a diode when it is reverse biased.
7. What is the importance of peak inverse voltage?
The importance of peak inverse voltage is highlighted in the reverse bias situation of
the diode. The diode may be destroyed if this value reaches a particular threshold.
When a diode is not conducting, a reverse voltage is applied across it. This reverse
voltage peak value determines the diode's peak inverse voltage or PIV rating.
8. Why diodes are not operated in the breakdown region in rectifiers?
A diode can be damaged or burned because the amount of the current passing through
it increases uncontrollably in the breakdown zone. Didoes in rectifiers are not employed
in the breakdown region for this reason.
9. Why half-wave rectifiers are generally not used in dc power supply?
Because the output amplitude is less than the input amplitude and there is no output
during the negative half-cycle, the half-wave rectifier is most commonly used in low-
power applications.
10. Draw the circuit of a full-wave rectifier.

11. What are the circuits used to create a full-wave rectifier?

The full-wave rectifier circuit can be built in two different ways. A center-tapped
transformer and two diodes are used in the first method. A center-tapped full-wave
rectifier is a name for this configuration. A standard transformer with four diodes
arranged as abridge is used in the second method. A bridge rectifier is what this is
called.
12. What is the importance of a series current limiting resistor?
A current limiting resistor helps mitigate the effect of voltage increases by virtue of its
linear IV curve. Additionally, resistors behave oppositely from LEDs in relation to its
temperature – as temperature increases, resistance also increases.
13. Simulate a half-wave rectifier and a full-wave rectifier using Simulink. You can use
references such as materials found on the internet. (cite everything)

CONCLUSION:
As a result, we may deduce that half-wave and full-wave rectifier circuits can be
constructed, and their output voltages and curves can be measured and recorded in a
systematic manner. After that, the effects of the load resistor and capacitor on the DC output
voltage are examined. Half- and full-wave rectifiers are used to convert AC to DC voltage. The
fundamental function of a rectifier in an industrial setting is to rectify voltage. AC is used
throughout the electrical system, but it must be converted to DC for welding, electroplating,
and as a DC source for motors with particular speed controls. As a result, doing this experiment
is crucial in order to increase the industry's understanding of rectifiers.
RECOMMENDATION:
As an ECE student, my advice to future students who will be assigned to the program is
to the same thing is to:
-Learn the difference between a half-wave and a full-wave rectifier.
-Become familiar with the fundamentals of Simulink.
-Make the most of your time.
