TRAINING/WORKSHOP RE: VERMICOMPOSTING

DATE/TIME : October 28, 2022 @ 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

VENUE : NUEVA VIZCAYA PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL

I. RATIONALE

The Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Hospital (NVPH) biodegradable waste generation as of third quarter
covering the period of January 2022 to September 2022 reached 14.5 tons and expected to rise in the coming
years due to expansion of the hospital facilities and services.

One of the innovative efforts of the government in solid waste management (SWM) is the introduction of
vermicomposting method that lessens the curve of increasing problems on solid waste. Vermicomposting is
the process that rely on earthworms and microorganisms to help stabilize active organic materials and
convert them to valuable soil amendment and source of plant nutrients. Vermicomposting is one of the most
efficient means to mitigate and manage environmental pollution problems.

NVPH is one of the large institutions in this province that generates mass amount of wastes. The NVPH acts
in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-
Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) to the provisions of RA 9003 also known as
“Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”. Seemingly, the hospital sustains the waste segregation
system.

Hence, this training/workshop aims to manage biodegradable wastes and to provide additional profit through
the end product called the vermicast which serves as fertilizer of the flowers and vegetables in this
institution with low operational cost.

II. OBJECTIVES

1. To introduce vermicomposting in hospital to reduce biodegradable solid wastes.

2. To update the knowledge of entity in-charge in hospital solid waste management as part of their
professional growth.
3. To share knowledge and skills of Vermicomposting to grounds and maintenance workers.

III. METHODOLOGY

The activity will be a one-day face-to-face lecture of the topics needed to be followed by a workshop or
actual construction aiming that after the knowledge imparted shall be immediately applied. Face to face
setting is high relevance in this kind of the activity in order to ensure better understanding and
appreciation of the said activity. Standard health protocols will be observed all the time by proper
wearing of facemask and physical distancing.

1. Brief presentation of rationale and objectives of Vermicomposting.

2. Lecture Proper
3. Equip all participants through hands-on training

VI. EXPECTED OUTCOME

All participants actively listened to the lectures and applied it making vermicomposting beds near the
Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Thereby NVPH is the first hospital in PLGU- Nueva Vizcaya
