Engine Fire Detection

The engine fire detection system provides the means to detect a fire
or overheat condition in either engine nacelle. The detection system
incorporates a semiconductor, coaxial cable, fire detection control boxes,
and sensor elements (Figure 4). It forms a closed loop around all the vital
engine components which are susceptible to fire. The loop has a variable
resistance which changes with temperature. It is sensitive along its entire
length and transmits a signal to the cockpit.

Nacelle Fire Zones

These zones contain the engine accessory, compressor, combustor, and
turbine sections. Most of the lines and components carry flammable fluids. In
this area, fire sensing elements and fire extinguishing nozzles are provided
and materials are selected based on their fire resistance. The firewalls
provide fire resistance for the forward and aft nacelle compartments.
Figure 4: Fire Detector Sensor Cable

Fire Detector Sensor Cable

The fire detector sensor cable is clamped to the support brackets along the
Fire Detection Control Unit (RK-1 thru RK-48 Except

elements, as measured from the center conductor cable to the outer tube.
In normal operation, the sensor cable resistance decreases as temperature
rises.
Fire Detection Control Unit (RK-45, RK-49 and After)
The separate left and right fire detect control units are replaced by a single
unit. This control unit is installed on the left aft cabin sidewall above the
control junction box. The control unit is powered from the LH and RH LOAD
BUSES through the LH and RH FIRE DET circuit breakers. The control unit
consists of four integral circuits, two fire detection circuits and two ground
fault discriminating circuits.

Fire Detection & Sensor Cable Fault Discrimination Circuit

CABIN During normal operation, the sensor cable resistance decreases as its temperature rises. As the sensor cable is heated
PRESSURE LO and its resistance falls below the fire alarm point (100 +57/-38 ohms). The output voltage of the comparator simultaneously
L FIRE disables the short discriminating lockout circuit and energizing the fire warning light and tone generator. Should the cable
DET FAIL resistance continue to fall, the short discriminating comparator V1B will operate but have no effect on the alarm. If the cable
resistance of a fire detection cable’s center conductor falls instantly (ground faults) below the fire and discriminating points,
electronic lockout will occur. This illuminates the L or R FIRE DET FAIL light on the annunciator panel, disabling the fire alarm.
CABIN The basic control discriminates between a true fire and a short circuit by recognizing how the sensor cable resistance falls.
PRESSURE HI An instantaneous change in cable sensor resistance is rejected as a fire but is accepted as a short.
R FIRE
DET FAIL Master Test
The rotary test switch on the overhead switch panel has L FIRE DET and R FIRE DET positions. These positions are used
to perform integrity checks of the detection circuits, to test the fire bell and to illuminate the GO/NO GO lights, according to
the condition of the system.

Selection of one of these positions completes a circuit through the sensing element and detector control unit, simulating
CABIN a fire condition. If a fault exists in the detector control or the sensor element is shorted or open-circuited, the fire warning
PRESSURE LO light will not illuminate. In this case, the respective red FIRE DET FAIL light on the annunciator panel and the NO GO light
will illuminate. The respective FIRE DET FAIL light will also illuminate any time a sensor element is shorted or open, as the
L FIRE
sensor is continuously monitored. The fire detection circuits and lights are powered by the respective left or right load bus.
DET FAIL

CABIN Engine Fire Warning Annunciators

PRESSURE HI Two red fire warning lights, one for each engine, are located on the fire extinguisher control panel which is mounted on the
R FIRE center of the instrument panel glareshield. The applicable light will illuminate when the temperature in that engine nacelle
DET FAIL reaches a predetermined value. Pressing either fire warning light will arm the No. 1 and No. 2 fire bottles and will be indicated
by the BOT 1 ARMED PUSH and BOT 2 ARMED PUSH lights illuminating on the fire extinguisher control panel.
At the same time, the generator field will be tripped and the L or R F/V CLOSE and L or R H/V CLOSE switchlights for the
associated engine will illuminate amber, indicating that the fuel shutoff valve and the hydraulic shutoff valve have closed.
These switchlights are located next to each fire warning light and can be used to open or close the fuel and hydraulic shutoff
valves to the respective engine. Closure of the valve is indicated by illumination of the switchlight. These switchlights are the
sequence type, so the light illumination will indicate the last position of the valve.

Engine Fire Bell Cutoff Switch

The engine fire bell cutoff switch is an illuminated press-to-reset switch mounted on the shroud. When a fire is detected in
the nacelle, the engine fire warning annunciator illuminates, the tone generator sounds, and the center of the ENG FIRE
BELL OFF (cutoff) switch illuminates. Pressing the cutoff switch activates the fire bell cutoff relays that mute the fire bell or
tone generator and extinguish the switchlight. If a fire is detected in the other nacelle, the alarm and light will be activated.

Fire Extinguishing System

Nacelle Fire Extinguishing
Nacelle fire extinguishing controls provide the pilot with a means to select and discharge either fire extinguisher container to either engine compartment.
ƒƒ The red LH or RH ENG FIRE PUSH warning annunciator switches are located on the shroud and will illuminate if a fire or overheat condition is present.
ƒƒ To extinguish the fire, raise the guardover the LH or RH ENG FIRE PUSH annunciator switch and press to arm the extinguisher bottles.
ƒƒ This switch will close the respective fuel and hydraulic shutoff valves, trip the generator, illuminate both the BOT 1 and BOT 2 ARMED PUSH
switchlights, and provide electrical power to the BOT 1 and BOT 2 ARMED PUSH switchlight contacts.
ƒƒ Upon actuation (pressing) of either the BOT 1 or BOT 2 ARMED PUSH switch, 28V DC is applied to the respective actuator cartridge.
ƒƒ The resulting explosive energy breaks the end of the housing assembly, removing the mechanical locking force against the discharge valve.
ƒƒ The fire extinguishing agent is discharged through the valve into the extinguisher delivery tube and nacelle discharge ducts.
ƒƒ The respective BOT 1 or BOT 2 ARMED PUSH switchlight will extinguish, indicating the extinguishing container has been discharged.
ƒƒ If the L or R ENG FIRE PUSH annunciator switch remains illuminated, indicating fire is still present, the remaining BOT 1 or BOT 2 ARMED PUSH
switch may be actuated to release the extinguishing agent from the other extinguisher container to the same nacelle fire area.
NOTE: Actuating the remaining fire bottle should only occur after completing the ENGINE FIRE checklist and a fire is still present.

The fuel/hydraulic valve shutoff switches are also provided on the shroud indicator panel to close the fuel and hydraulic valves. The position indicator lights
on the switch indicate the positions of the fuel and hydraulic shutoff valves.
Two fixed fire-extinguishing containers are installed in the aft fuselage. Each container has extinguishing agent with deployment tubes to supply either the
left or the right engine so that these bottles can be fired into the left, right, or both nacelles as required. The extinguishing agent has no damaging effects
on the engine compartment or components, which means no engine components require replacement as a result of the extinguishing agent entering the
nacelle.
All controls and indicator lights for the nacelle fire extinguishing system are located on the shroud indicator panel. The pilot is alerted by the fire detection
system indicators and an aural warning tone.

Overboard Discharge Indicator

The overboard discharge indicator provides a visual reference for the condition of the nacelle fire extinguishers. The indicator
is mounted to the exterior fuselage skin aft of the aft fuselage doors. The indicator contains a red disk that is visible from
the exterior. The extinguisher container contains a thermal relief valve which opens between 215-226°F (101-107°C).
Extinguishing agent is dumped overboard, breaking the seal on the discharge indicator and ejecting the red indicator disk.

Controls and Indicator Lights

All indicator lights used in the fire protection system are combination indicator/switches and are located on the shroud
indicator panel. The switches consist of momentary push and push-to-reset types. The left and right indicator/switchlights
are identical. The indicator/switchlights, LH and RH ENG FIRE PUSH, warn the pilot in the event of an engine fire. These
indicator/switches energize the BOT 1 and BOT 2 ARMED PUSH indicator/switchlights, close the fuel shutoff valves,
close the hydraulic shutoff valves, and trip the generators. The LH or RH ENG FIRE PUSH indicator/ switches allow
the left or right set of actuator cartridges/squibs to be selected. The BOT 1 ARMED PUSH and BOT 2 ARMED PUSH
indicator/switchlights allow the forward or aft bottle to be discharged by energizing the respective actuator cartridge/squib.

Aft Fuselage Baggage Compartment

The baggage compartment installed in the tail cone is made of lightweight composite material and is certified as a class D baggage compartment so it
requires no detection or extinguishing capabilities.
An enlarged, two-section access door is installed to simplify loading. Four small access doors within the compartment provide access to the battery
connector, engine fire extinguisher pressure gauges, and hydraulic reservoir sight gauge.
The compartment has a capacity of 25 cubic feet, including an extended section to accommodate up to six pairs of 200-centimeter skis, and is certified to
a baggage weight of 450 pounds. The aft baggage compartment can be increased to a capacity of 30 cubic feet by a Hangar One modification.

Servicing and Procedures

Preflight
Check the fire extinguisher bottles pressure gauge. Normal operating pressure is 580 to 600 PSIG. If the pressure is below 580 PSIG, replace the bottle.
Check the overboard discharge indicator. If the discharge indicator is missing, the bottle is empty and must be replaced before flight.
Check security of the cockpit and cabin fire extinguishers. Verify adequate pressure and check the expiration date.

Servicing
The fire extinguisher bottles cannot be serviced in the aircraft; they must be removed and replaced by a serviceable unit or serviced by an approved
agency.
Servicing of the portable fire extinguishers consists of checking fire extinguisher weight and verifying adequate pressure. Fire extinguishers are date
limited; replace when the expiration date occurs.

Emergency Procedures
Emergency procedures involving fire protection include:
ƒƒ Engine Fire
ƒƒ Engine Fire Detector Failure
ƒƒ Electrical Fire or Smoke
ƒƒ Environmental System Smoke or Odor
ƒƒ Smoke Removal
ƒƒ Rear Baggage Smoke
Always refer to the applicable Beechjet 400A Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) and the Pilot’s Checklist for emergency procedures involving the fire protection
system.

Engine Fire
In response to an engine fire (ENG FIRE PUSH annunciators illuminated and fire bell sounding), silence the fire bell then
identify the affected engine before taking action. Immediately move the thrust levers of the affected engine to idle. If the ENG
FIRE PUSH switch remains illuminated, move the thrust lever to CUTOFF, push the illuminated ENG FIRE PUSH switch
and then push either BOT 1 or BOT 2 ARMED PUSH fire bottle switch. Turn the engine sync off and turn off the following
switches for the affected engine:
ƒƒ Generator reset
ƒƒ Jet pump
ƒƒ Boost pump
ƒƒ Engine EFC
Select the OPERATING ENGINE as the cabin pressure source on the environmental control panel.
The FUEL/HYDRAULIC VALVE CLOSE lights of the affected engine will be illuminated.
If there is still indication of fire after completing the ENGINE FIRE checklist, push the remaining illuminated fire bottle switch.
If fuel crossfeed is required, prior to selecting CROSSFEED, turn on the boost pump of the affected engine.
 WARNIN
If fire occurs immediately after takeoff when using the ECS (OFF) takeoff procedure, the CABIN PRESS source
selector must remain in the OFF position to assure airplane performance.

 WARNIN
If it has not, or cannot, be visibly verified that the fire has been extinguished, immediately land at the nearest
CABIN suitable airport.
PRESSURE LO
L FIRE Engine Fire Detector Fail
DET FAIL If the FIRE DET FAIL annunciator illuminates following an ENG FIRE PUSH switch illumination, the fire should be considered
to still be burning. Immediately complete the ENGINE FIRE PROCEDURE, push the remaining illuminated fire bottle switch
CABIN and land at the nearest suitable airport.
PRESSURE HI If the FIRE DET FAIL annunciator illuminates without an ENG FIRE PUSH switch illumination, or any other indication of an
R FIRE engine fire, then have the fault repaired before the next flight.

Electrical Fire or Smoke
Upon indication of either an electrical fire or smoke onboard the airplane, don the oxygen masks and smoke goggles. Switch
the mic selector to OXY MASK and, if necessary, carry out the smoke removal procedures. If the source of the fire or smoke
is known, isolate the faulty circuits.
If the source of the fire or smoke is unknown, select the battery, master generator and pitch trim switches to EMER. Avoid
any icing conditions and prepare to land at the nearest suitable airport. Set both the cabin pressure control and standby
altimeter. Confirm VREF N1, AOA and landing distance then give a verbal briefing. Ensure airspeed is VREF + 20 KIAS, flaps will
not extend and the landing gear will have to be lowered using the alternate gear extension procedure.
 WARNIN
If it has not, or cannot, be visibly verified that the fire has been extinguished, immediately land at the nearest
suitable airport.

If the fire or smoke continues, turn the battery off, pull the EMER BUS FDR & EMER BUS TIE circuit breakers (DC power).
Set the master generator switches to NORM, set the battery back to ON and the pitch trim to NORM. If the fire or smoke
continues, then set the master generator switches to EMER and the battery to OFF.
 WARNIN
When both master generator switches are placed to EMER and the battery is selected OFF, all electrical power
except standby power is lost.

The following equipment will remain operable, some for a limited duration, after the ELECTRICAL FIRE OR SMOKE procedure
is completed:
ƒƒ Left ITT indicator and lighting
ƒƒ Standby attitude indicator and lighting
ƒƒ Standby airspeed indicator lighting
ƒƒ Standby altimeter lighting
ƒƒ Standby magnetic compass lighting
ƒƒ No. 1 COMM
ƒƒ No. 1 Radio Tuning Unit (RTU 1)
ƒƒ Pilot’s and copilot’s headphones and hand mic (interphone will be inoperative.)

Engine EFC will revert to manual and engine thrust loss will be noted. Engine anti-ice valves will open and appropriate thrust
settings must be used.
The following hydraulically powered systems will not be functional:
ƒƒ Landing gear (use ALTERNATE GEAR EXTENSION procedure)
ƒƒ Flaps
ƒƒ Speed brakes
ƒƒ Thrust reversers
ƒƒ Anti-skid system (Landing distance will increase approximately 40%)
RK-45, RK-49 and After changes:
ƒƒ Pilot’s and copilot’s headphones and boom mic/hand mic (interphone will be inoperative)

Environmental System Smoke or Odor

On first indication of smoke or odor, don the oxygen masks and smoke goggles. Switch the mic selector to OXY MASK.
Isolate the source by selecting either L ENG or R ENG as the cabin pressure source on the cabin pressure and cockpit
temperature control panel.

Smoke Removal
To remove smoke from the airplane, first don the oxygen masks and smoke goggles. Switch the mic selector to OXY MASK.
On the cabin pressure and cockpit temperature control panel, decrease the manual press control to absolute pressure
regulator setting (14,000 feet maximum). Descend to 15,000 feet or the minimum safe altitude.
