Vocabulary Words in the Voices Story

 Temperament – the combination of mental and emotional traits of a person.

 Euchre – a card game usually played with the 32 highest cards in the deck.

 Bridge(game) - a card game in which one partnership plays to fulfill a certain declaration

against an opposing partnership.

 Affronted – insulted deliberately.

 Desecration / Desecrate – to treat with sacrilege (violation of something sacred).

 Prodigious – arousing admiration or amazement.

 Sulk – to remain silent or aloof in an ill-humoured manner.

 Dispute – a controversy or difference of opinion.

 Coronet – a crown-like ornament for the head.

 Ridicule – speech or action intended to cause contemptuous laughter or derision.

 Lavish – bestowed or occurring in abundance.

 Brazen – shameless or impudent.

 Erotic – arousing or satisfying sexual desire.

LITERARY DEVICES

1. METAPHOR

Is a comparison of two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”.

2. PERSONIFICATION

Is when a writer gives human qualities to animals or objects.


3. S IMILE

Is an expression comparing one thing to another using the words “like” or “as”.

4. OXYMORON

Consist of two opposite terms.

5. PARALLELISM

The use of components in a sentence that are grammatically same; or similar in

their construction, sound, meaning or mater.

6. REPETITION

A literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to make an

idea clearer.

7. HYPERBOLE

Is an obvious exaggeration or overstatement.

8. IRONY

Is a figurative speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended

meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. It is a difference

between appearance and reality.

9. SYMBOLISM

Is using an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning.

10. .IMAGERY

Is when a writer invokes the five senses.
