om. Tom offers to show him his sore foot if he will accept, and Jim agrees to do so,
but Aunt Polly comes out of the house and throws him out, putting Tom back to
work.

Unhappy, Tom continues working until Ben Rogers walks by. Tom pretends to
enjoy his hard work, saying, "Do they let a boy whitewash a fence every day?"

Because Tom pretends that whitewashing the fence is a fun thing to do, Ben
suddenly wants to do it too. After some negotiation, Tom allows Ben to whitewash
a section of the fence for him. The rest of the day, he lets various children do the
whitewashing in exchange for certain things of value: a kite, a dead rat, a key, a tin
soldier, and other items. The whole time, Tom sits in the back and does nothing.

"He had discovered, without realizing it, one of the fundamental principles of
human conduct, namely: that for someone, man or boy, to desire something, it is
only necessary to make it difficult to achieve."

Tom discovers that work and play are just states of mind - people do things for fun
if they believe it is a privilege and not an obligation. With that lesson learned,
he goes inside the house to tell Aunt Polly that his homework is
done.
