Learning objectives :

1.Construct tables of values and draw graphs for functions of the form 𝑎𝑥 𝑛 (and simple sums of these) and functions of the
form 𝑎𝑏 𝑥 + 𝑐 .
2. Draw and interpret graphs representing exponential growth and decay problems.
Recognise, sketch and interpret graphs of functions ie Linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal and exponential
Note : Different type of graph

Example 1:
1)

i) Using the graph, draw tangents to estimate the gradient of the graph when…
a) 𝑥 = 1 b) 𝑥 = 7

ii) Work out the minimum value of the graph.

Example 2 :

3
(c) Use your graph to solve 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 = 7. [3]

𝑥 = ………, …………, ………….

(d) Draw the tangent to the curve where 𝑥 = −2. Use the tangent to calculate an estimate of the gradient of the curve
where 𝑥 = −2. [3]

Example 3:

(c) Use your graph to

(i) solve 𝑓(𝑥) = 0.5 [3]
𝑥 =……….., …………, …………

(ii) find the inequalities for 𝑘, so that 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑘 has only 1 answer. [2]

𝑘 <……………, 𝑘 > ………………….
