1. Let A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {1, 3, 5, 7}. Find

(a) A ∪ B
(b) A ∩ B
(c) |A \ B|
(d) |A| + |B|

2. When a fair die is thrown twice, find the probability that

(a) both outcomes are even numbers;


(b) exactly one prime number is obtained;
(c) the sum of the 2 outcomes is 4.

3. Using the numbers ‘1’, ‘2’ and ‘3’,

(a) how many different 3-digit numbers can be formed if repetition is not allowed?
(b) how many different 3-digit numbers can be formed if repetition is allowed?
(c) how many different 3-digit even numbers can be formed if repetition is not allowed?

4. Suppose Ak = {x ∈ [1, 100] : x is divisible by k}.

(a) Find |A3 |, |A5 | and |A7 |.


(b) Find |A3 ∪ A5 ∪ A7 |.

5. If A ⊆ B and B ⊆ C, explain why A ⊆ C.

6. Mary and John are classmates in a class of 10 students. Now, the teacher randomly
chooses 3 students from the class to be student helpers. Find the probability that

(a) both Mary and John are chosen to be student helpers;


(b) Mary or John (possibly both) is chosen to be a student helper.

7. Let A = {x ∈ R : |x − 1| ≤ 2}, B = {x ∈ R : |x| ≥ 1} and C = {x ∈ R : |x + 2| ≤ 3}.

(a) Express A, B and C using interval notation.


(b) Determine each of the following sets using interval notation: A∪B, A∩B, B∩C, B\C.
