MATH 1011 University Mathematics I

Tutorial 2

1. Prove that
1 + 5 + 9 + · · · (4n − 3) = 2n2 − n.

2. Prove that 5|(n5 − n) for every integer n.

Pn 1 √
3. Prove that k=1 √ ≤ 2 n − 1 for any positive integer n.
k

4. Using mathematical induction, show that for all positive integers n,

(a) 3 × 6 + 6 × 9 + 9 × 12 + · · · + 3n × (3n + 3) = 3n(n + 1)(n + 2);

1 × 21 2 × 22 n × 2n 2n+1
(b) + + ··· + =1− ;
(1 + 2)! (2 + 2)! (n + 2)! (n + 2)!
(c) 7n − 3n is divisible by 4;
(d) 23n − 1 is divisible by 11.

5. (Challenging! ) It is given that

sin 2A = 2 sin A cos A,

2 sin A cos B = sin(A + B) + sin(A − B).

Prove by mathematical induction that

sin 2nx
cos x + cos 3x + cos 5x + ... + cos[(2n − 1)x] =
2 sin x
for all positive integers n.

n2 x−2
6. Find a natural domain of the functions f (n) = and g(x) = .
