SYMBOL OF ISLAM AND TRADITIONAL DRESS OF ISLAM

RELIGIOUS AND HISTPRICAL INFLUENCES

Islam Symbols
Islam is a religion that began in Arabia and was revealed to humanity by the Prophet
Muhammad. There are no official religious Islam symbols, but several symbols have a special
place in Islam.

The Star and Cresent:

The star and crescent are the best-known symbol used to represent Islam. The symbol is not
Muslim in origin, it was a polytheistic icon adopted during the spread of Islam, and its use
today is sometimes controversial in the Muslim world. The crescent and star are often said to
be Islamic symbols, but historians say that they were the insignia of the Ottoman Empire, not of
Islam as a whole.
"Allah" in Arabic:

The words "Allah" in Arabic script or characters can be regarded as visually representing Islam
as a symbol.

SOCIAL INFLUENCES

ISLAMIC DRESS CODE FOR WOMEN

Hijab
The word "hijab" is often used to refer to a Muslim woman's modest attire. It refers to a
headscarf, which is a square or rectangular piece of fabric folded, laid over the head, and
fastened under the chin. This is also known as a shaylah or tarhah, depending on the style and
position.

Khimar
A term used to describe a woman's head and/or face veil. This term is often used to describe a
scarf that drapes over a woman's entire top half of her body, down to her waist.

AL-AMIRA
The al-amira is a two-piece veil that usually doesn’t cover the face. It includes a tight cap and a
tube-like scarf worn over it, which also covers the neck. It’s predominantly worn in Southeast
Asia.

BURQA
This veil and body covering conceals a woman's entire body, including her eyes, which are
hidden behind a mesh screen. Common in Afghanistan; sometimes refers to the above-
mentioned "niqab" face veil.

NIQAB
The niqab is a face covering that is normally black in color. It's commonly worn by women with a
headscarf and an abaya, or another loose-fitting robe that covers their whole body. The way this veil is
worn varies by country, but there are two main styles to choose from. The 'absolute niqab,' which
covers the entire face and head with a cutout for the eyes, is common in Gulf states.

CHADOR
Women in Iran have worn the chador for decades. It's a shawl-like cloth that's draped over the head and
completely around the body. The chador is not pinned or tucked in; instead, it is simply wrapped around
the body or kept shut by the hands at all times. Colorful variants can be seen at home or at the mosque,
but black varieties are commonly worn in public.

SHAYLA
Women in the Gulf states wear the shayla, a long, rectangular scarf wrapped around their heads. A
Shayla may be worn with an abaya or other garments, depending on personal choice, and the cloth
comes in a variety of fabrics and colors. A shayla is a headscarf that leaves the face uncovered, while
hijab is the act of dressing modestly for religious reasons.

ISLAMIC TRADITONAL DRESS CODE FOR MEN

THOBE
Thobe, also spelled Thawb, is a Muslim man's long robe. The Thobe's top is custom-made like a shirt,
ends at the ankles, and is loose. It is popular in Arabic countries. It's usually white, but other colors,
particularly in the winter, are also available. In Kuwait, the thobe is known as dishdasha, while in the
UAE, it is known as Kandourah.

Ghutra and Egal

Men wear the ghutra, which is a square or rectangular headscarf with a rope band (usually black) to
keep it in place. The ghutra (headscarf) is usually white or red/white or black/white checkered. This is
known as a shemagh or kuffiyeh in some countries.

The egal (rope band) is a personal preference. Some men iron and starch their scarves meticulously to
maintain their tidy form.
BHIST
A cloak worn over the thobe is known as the Bisht. It is normally worn by high-ranking government
officials or religious leaders. It's also worn at weddings and other special occasions.

SERWAL
Serwal is a white cotton pant with an elastic belt, drawstring, or a combination of the two. Mikasser is
another name for it. Under the thobe or men's gowns, this white cotton pant is worn with a white
cotton undershirt.

Shalwar Kameez
Both men and women in the Indian subcontinent wear these long tunics over loose trousers in matching
suits. The trousers are referred to as shalwar, and the tunic is referred to as kameez.

Turban
The turban is a 10-plus ft long rectangular piece of cloth that is wrapped around the head and is known
by different names around the world. It's also worn with a skullcap on top. It's laid out in a way that
depicts each area and culture. Turban is a typical Islamic garment worn by many Muslim men in North
Africa, India, Afghanistan, Iran, and other parts of the world.
