Fundamentals of Digital Image Processing
Image Processing Image
Objective
Image processing is a method to convert an image into An image is defined as 2D function, F(x,y), & the amplitude
digital form and perform some operations on it, in order of F at any pair of coordinates is called the intensity of that
to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful image at that point. When x,y, and amplitude values of F are
informations. finite, we call it a digital image.
Fundamental Steps Images are 2D signals
represented in 2D matrix form.
•Each element of matrix is
known as pixels.
•Each pixel is associated with
some value that represents
intensity at that point.
•Image is two dimensional (2D)
signal f(x,y)

Image Processing Operations

Low Level Operation : Image acquisition ,
preprocessing, and compression.
Image Acquisition: An image is captured by a sensor such as a
monochrome or color TV camera and digitized.
Image Enhancement: To bring out detail or simply to highlight
certain features of interest in an image. Middle Level Operation: Segmentation
and feature extraction

High Level Operation: Pattern

Classification (Identification of object;
classification and clustering.
Image Restoration: Improving the appearance of an image, based
on probabilistic mathematical model of image degradation.
Image Segmentation: Partitioning of the image into its various
segments or to separate objects from the mage backgrounds.

Image Compression: Reducing the storage required to save image.

Representation & Description
Morphological Operation: Tools for extracting component that
are useful in representation & description of shape.
