COMPETENCY
workplace TLE_HECGOS7/8-0h-5
LEARNING a. Identify the hazards and risks indicators in workplace; and
OBJECTIVES b. Explain the types of hazards and risks indicators in workplace.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
In order to control workplace hazards and eliminate or reduce the risk, you should take the
following steps:
o identify the hazard by carrying out a workplace risk assessment; anything that may cause harm.
o determine how employees might be at risk;
o evaluate the risks; and take action
o record and review hazards at least annually, or earlier if something changes.
o Review the risk assessment and update when necessary

2 types of hazards and risks indicators in workplace

1. Leading indicator - is a measure preceding or indicating a future event used to drive and
measure activities carried out to prevent and control injury. A good leading indicator helps to
focus future actions on what matters, it serves as an early warning signal. Examples include:
• Safety training
• Ergonomic opportunities identified and corrected
• Reduction of MSD risk factors
• Employee perception surveys
• Safety audits
2. Lagging indicators are reactive in nature. They measure the effectiveness of a safety program
after the facts. It can provide information on the effectiveness of actions performed in the past
and do not enable their current monitoring and correction. Since they record things after the
fact, they inform a reactive health and safety culture. They're typically easy to identify, measure
and compare, which makes lagging indicators very useful

What are some examples of lagging indicators?

• number or location of OSHA recordable incidents
• rate of injuries
• illness
• fatalities
• days away from work (DAFW)
• incident rates including Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR)
• Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART)
• Lost Time Incident Rates (LTIR)

SAQ-1: What are the importance of Leading Indicators and lagging indicators?
SAQ-2 : Why do we need use these indicators in determining the hazards and risks in workplace?

Let’s Practice!

Directions: Identify which of these statements are Leading Indicators and which are Lagging
Indicators. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Safety training = _________________________

2. Rate of illness = _________________________
3. Lost time incident rate = _________________________
4. Ergonomic identified and corrected = _________________________
5. Rate of injuries = _________________________
6. Reduction of MSD risk factor = _________________________
7. Number or location of recordable incidents = _________________________
8. Safety audits = _________________________
9. Rate of fatalities = _________________________
10. Employee perception surveys = _________________________

REMEMBER
Key Points

Definition of terms:

Leading indicators - focus on future health and safety performance with the intent of continuous
improvement. They are a signal and monitor of what is being done on an ongoing basis to prevent
worker illness and injury.

Lagging indicators - measure the end result of processes, policies and procedures. They’re a
record of things that have already happened.
