Applying the Science Processes
PETA 1

INTRODUCTION:
The study of Science requires the application of science process skills. These
science process skills are the tools that scientists use in arriving at answers to questions
and problems about natural phenomena. These are also the same processes we use in our
daily activities. They are important for a variety of reasons.
In this activity, you will utilize some science process skills to solve a problem.

I. OBJECTIVE:
 To apply the science process skills in solving problems.

II. MATERIALS:
3 cotton balls of different sizes
ruler

III. PROCEDURE:
1. Put all cotton on the table.
2. Compare the shape and size of the cotton balls.
3. Measure the diameter of each cotton ball. Fill the data table to record your
measurements.
4. Make a graph of the length of the diameter of the cotton balls
5. Take a cotton ball and blow on it. Measure the distance that the cotton ball moved
from your starting point.
6. Record the distance of the three cotton balls.
7. Make another graph of the distance it travelled. Interpret your graph.

your experiment.

V. ANALYSIS
Q: What senses did you use to observe the cotton balls? (Identify each sense organ and
tell how it was used.)
A:

Q: What factors affected the distance of the movement of the cotton balls from starting
point? Explain how each factor affected the result.
A:

Q: What science process skills did you apply in this activity? Explain how you used each.
