ARTS

-Came from the Latin world “ARS” which means ability or skills that aims to communicate beauty by
enticing senses.
HUMANITIES
-Came from the Latin world “HUMANUS” which means to be truly human.
-To be truly human is to be culturally enhanced and refined.
-Set of discipline that includes Grammar, Philosophy, Literature, History and Music
-It records or Interprets Man’s Thinking, Feeling, Regrets, Aspirations, Failures and what to he supposed
not to do in the world.

CULTURE
-Comes from the Latin term:” CULTUSCOLERE” which means to cultivate and to develop.
-It is the general way of life of a society, including ways of thinking, Beliefs, Customs, Language, Art and
Traditions.
HISTORY OF HUMANITIES
MEDIAVAL PERIOD
-humanities referred to the “Cultivation of Man’s Spirituality”
ARS-any special form of Book-Learning, such as grammar of Logic, Magic or Astrology
V RENAISSANCE PERIOD THE WORD ARS- reacquired the meaning that was inherent in its ancient form
of craft.
V SEVENTEENTH CENTURY- the era when the problem and idea of aesthetics. The study of Beauty began
to unfold distinctly from the notion of technical workmanship.
V EIGHTEENTH CENTURY- The word evolve to distinguish the fine arts and the useful arts
RENAISSANCE PERIOD
-the renaissance refers to the era in Europe from the 14 th to the 16th century in which a new style in
painting, sculpture and architecture developed after the gothic.
MODERN PERIOD
-modern art refers to late 19th and early-to-mid 20th century art. Including Impressionism, Fauvism, and
Expressionism Works produced during this time showcase artists interest in re-imagining, reinterpreting
and even rejecting traditional aesthetic value of preceding styleds.
What is ART?
-art is the right reason of making things.
VISUAL ARTS
-these are the types of arts that can be perceived by the sense of sight and can be projected onto 3-
dimensional graphic forms.
Ex. Water Color/Acyclic in Painting: Bricks and Concrete for Architecture: Wood, Stones, and Metal for
Sculpture, Plants and Trees for landscaping, Textiles and furnishings for interior designing.
LITERARY ARTS
-arts which pertain to Letters, Words, Sentences, Paragraphs as another means of artist’s expression of
personal ideas, feeling, values, beliefs etc.
DRAMA AND THEATER
- refers to an action played by several characters in a story giving emphasis on a plot.
MUSIC
- Is combination of various sounds
- Music, Art Concerned with combining vocal or instrumental sounds for beauty of form or emotional
expression, usually according to cultural standards of rhythm, melody, and in most western music,
harmony.
DANCE
-considered as the first art cultivated man and the origin of all his aesthetic beauty
- As the “ORIGIN OF ARTS” dance served as the inspiration in conducting different kinds of arts like
painting, music.
ARTS AS REPRESENTATION
- Representational art is art that depicts something, such as a tree in a landscape, an apple in a still life,
or a figure in a portrait
-Aristotle is the most important student of Plato in philosophy and Aristotle agreed with his professor
that imitation is an aspect of art.
ARISTOTLE
-he made ground-breaking discoveries in all branches of philosophy and science
-In addition to being a philosopher, Aristotle was a teacher who established the Lyceum in Athens.
PLATO
-The most significant philosopher. He has made contributions to several different philosophical
subfields, such as ethics, cosmology, and metaphysics.
SUBJECT OF ART
-the term subject in art refers to the main idea that is represented in the artwork. It is the essence of the
piece.
3TYPES OF ARTS
-Representational Art -Non-Representational
-Abstract Art
REPRESENTATIONAL ART-is art that is an actual object in reality. It has subcategories which include:
-Realism -Idealism
-Impressionism -Stylization
ABSTRACTION- it is a type of art that takes the subject into reality but in different representation
elements being represented that transform the subject.
NON-REPRESENTATIONAL- is only made by a subject for aesthetic purposes
SOURCES OF SUBJECT
-Nature -Religion
-History -Scared Oriental Text
-Greek and Roman Mythology
KINDS OF SUBJECT
-there are several kinds of subject matter in art, which include landscape, portrait, still life, historical,
figurative, social, political, etc.
Landscape- according to Mcardle, landscape refers to an artwork whose primary focus is natural
scenery, such as mountains, forests, cliffs, trees, rivers, valleys, etc.
Still Life- Inanimate objects arranged in indoor setting.
CONTENT IN ART
-it is the meaning, message and/or feeling imparted by a work of art.
There are 3 levels of meaning:
-Factual -Subjective
-Conventional
FACTUAL- literal statement or the narrative content in the work which can be directly understood
because the objects presented are easily recognized.
CONVENTATIONAL- special meaning that certain object or color has for a particular culture or group of
people.
SUBJECTIVE- any personal meaning consciously or unconsciously conveyed by the artist using private
symbolism which stems from his own associations of certain objects, actions, or colors from past
experiences.

HIERARCHY OF ARTS
Immanuel Kant- Music is the lowest of all arts because it only gives sensible pleasures.
Arthur Schopenhauer- Music is the greatest because it is capable of freeing man from his fears and
desires, from his anger and despair, and from other passions and anxieties.
Georg Wilhelm Friedruch Hegel- poetry has the best qualities like immediate perception, creative
imagination, development of thoughts and events.
Gottfried Leibnitz- the fusion of poetry and music is highest art
Hierarchy Of Arts- here is no final manner by which a hierarchy of arts may established. Each art has its
own value and each person has his/ her own preferences or opinions
Where does beauty lie?- beauty a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases
the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.
CATEGORIES OF BEAUTIFUL
The Sublime- enjoyment is aroused by astonishment and awe
The Nice- enjoyment is aroused by sympathy, love, benevolence, tenderness and modesty
The Comic- enjoyment is aroused because it makes us laugh
DIVISIONS OF ART
Practical Arts- directed to produce artifacts and utensils which cope with human needs.
Liberal Arts- intellectual efforts are considered; take for the cases of AB courses like Philosophy,
Psychology, Social Sciences, Journalism
Fine Arts- products of the human creativity in so far as they beauty in different ways and different media
like drawing, painting
Major Arts- characterized by their actual and potential expressiveness like music, poetry, sculpture
Minor Arts- connected with practical uses and purposes like interior design, landscape and porcelain
making.
Plastic Arts- perceived by sense of sight like painting, sculpture, architecture
ARTS AS A COMMUNICATION OF EMOTION
What is art? – Art is an expression and response to our emotions; it depicts our innermost thoughts
through an aesthetic experience. A person’s innermost feelings are reflected in their art. Art is a way of
looking at life, which is why people with artistic abilities and knowledge tend to be sensitive and
insightful

understanding.
