GRADE 10, 11 & 12 EXAM SCOPES ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE PAPER 1


LANGUAGE, COMPREHENSION & SUMMARY NOVEMBER EXAMS 2023
DURATION: 2 HOURS (WISH IT WERE LONGER) MARK ALLOCATION: 70
Gr.12 must refer to SSIP notes (2023). All aspects must be well studied. Expect anything. Provincial Common Paper.
Gr.10 & 11 are writing a District Common Paper.
All questions are compulsory

Section A Comprehension Writer’s viewpoint? Stylistic devices (Figures of speech/ Rhetorical 30
Question 1 Text A questions, effect of repetition, use of pronouns, use of statistics, quoting
experts in the field, reference to books on the subject under discussion).
Book Titles always written in Italics. Is writing subjective or objective?
Appropriateness (Refers to the suitability of something). Difference
between connotation and denotation. Writer’s tone (Attitude)/ Mood
(Atmosphere) – indicated via diction (choice of words). Identify irony
(saying opposite of what is actually intended) paradox ( juxtaposing of a
set of seemingly contradictory concepts that reveal a hidden truth).
Function of ellipsis. Effectiveness (Does it achieve its intended purpose)?
Writer’s tone? The author's attitude toward the topic, eg. Objective tone.
Writer’s attitude? Author’s feelings about subject he is writing about?
(Can be Positive or negative). Aside(s): Included as a side bar – to be
read by reader/ heard by an audience – purpose, writer is emphasizing a
point, demonstrating it to the reader).
Text B Look at TEXT A: Identify visual (cues) – What does it reveal (show)?
Compare information in Text A in a particular paragraph or the overall with
text B. Text B could be visual (picture or graph). Does the information
support certain ideas or not. Start by saying what Text B reveals and link
it to a similar concept in Text A.
Section B Summary Write seven facts into a fluent paragraph.be guided by the instruction: 10
Question 2 Summarise the seven facts of how to…? Try not to quote from passage,
unless time allows, and you can transcribe in your own words. Bullets
first, then a paragraph.
Section C Advertising Know your AIDA-principle (Attention/ Interest/Desire/Action). Target 10
Question 3 market of a product (Who the advertiser aims it at – not always “the youth”
narrow it down, be more specific). Use of rhetorical questions (Why?).
How does visual (picture) support claims (what the ad stays) made by
advertiser? Target audience of product (how do you know? Any clues)?
Expect two Grammar questions (See Q5 for details).
Question 4 Visual Literacy Setting of cartoons (Where is it taking place?/ Visual cues)? Body 10
Cartoons language – movements and facial expressions/ shape of eyes – what is
reveals about cartoon characters). Explain humour (type): Irony, Sarcasm/
Satire/ Pun/ Parody/Antithesis).?
Expect two Grammar questions (See Q5 for details).
Question 5 Textual Editing/ Spelling (Know some spelling rules and be well-read). Prefixes (have 10
Grammar meaning with words : eg. Recycle – (again), Suffixes (changes part of
speech of a word, eg. Toxic (Adjective) – Toxicity (Noun) & suffixes form
people nouns: Weld – welder. Root words (unbelie(f)vable), Synonyms,
Degrees of comparison, Redundancy, Critical Language Awareness
(Jargon, Colloquialisms/ Neologisms/ Slang). Concord/ Gerund/
Abbreviations (Supply abbreviation or write out in full – identify type)
Direct & Reported Speech).Abbreviations. Study SSIP notes for all these
grammar issues. Countable nouns (less vs fewer) AND (much vs. many).
Parts of speech of words. Apostrophe rule(s).
Latin words/nouns: (singular vs. plural) A forum (one) vs. many fora.(lots)
