Renewable energy refers to energy sources that are naturally replenished and do not deplete over time.

These energy resources are considered environmentally friendly as they produce minimal greenhouse
gas emissions and have a lower impact on the climate compared to fossil fuels. The various renewable
energy resources in Uganda include:

1. Hydropower: Uganda has a vast potential for hydropower due to its many rivers and lakes.
Hydropower plants, such as the Owen Falls Dam on the Nile River, generate a significant portion of
Uganda's electricity.

2. Solar power: Uganda has abundant sunlight throughout the year, making solar energy a viable option.
This renewable resource is harnessed through photovoltaic panels installed on rooftops, solar farms,
and solar water heaters.

3. Biomass: Biomass energy is derived from organic matter, such as agricultural waste, forests, and
plants. In Uganda, biomass provides a significant energy source for cooking and heating, mainly through
the use of wood and charcoal.

4. Geothermal energy: Although still in the exploratory phase, geothermal energy has great potential in
Uganda. The country lies within the East African Rift System, which offers opportunities for geothermal
power generation.

5. Wind power: Uganda's potential for wind energy is concentrated in the eastern and northern regions,
characterized by high wind speeds. Wind turbines are being installed in these areas to harness this clean
and renewable source of electricity.

6. Biofuels: Uganda is exploring the production and use of biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. This
includes the production of ethanol from sugarcane and the use of bio-diesel from crops like Jatropha.

Uganda has been making efforts to utilize these renewable energy resources to diversify its energy mix,
reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and increase access to electricity in both rural and urban areas. The
government has implemented policies and attracted investments to promote renewable energy
development and has set a target of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.
