THE pH OF SALT SOLUTIONS

The reaction of an acid and a base forms a salt. The salt of a weak acid and a weak base
may be acidic, neutral or basic, depending on the relative strengths of the acids and
bases involved.

A strong acid + A strong base neutral salt

A strong acid + A weak base acidic salt

A weak acid + A strong base basic salt

The strong acids are HBr, HCl, HClO4, HI, HNO3, H2SO4.
The strong bases are the Group I and Group II hydroxides and most others are considered weak.
Provide the missing chemical formulas and terms in the chart below. The first row has been done
as an example.

NaF HF Weak NaOH Strong Basic

AlI3 HI Strong Al(OH)3 Weak Acidic

Ca(NO3)2 HNO3 Strong Ca(OH)2 Strong Neutral

Fe(NO3)2 HNO3 Strong Fe(OH)2 Weak Acidic
