Letter to Families
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our class is ready to begin the first unit in the Growing in Faith, Growing in
Christ program for Grade 1. The program is built on the curriculum expectations
found in the Catholic Elementary Curriculum Policy Document for Grade 1.

Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ will follow the liturgical year of the Catholic
Church, and will align with what is happening in our parish. This program will
provide a meaningful daily faith experience for your child, building a knowledge
of the faith with an emphasis on the importance of family.

The first unit, “I Am a Child of God,” will introduce your child to God as our
Creator. The unit will take approximately 11 weeks. As we work through the unit,
the children in the class will learn

• that each person is special and that God has called each one by name. They will
explore the importance of their own names and understand that each person is
unique in the eyes of God.

• that family is the root of all relationships. They will explore relationships in the
classroom and in the Church as well as their relationship with God, and compare
them to the important relationships that are created within the family.

• that prayer is an important part of our relationship with God. Through prayer at
school, at home, and with the family, they will strengthen their relationship with
God.

• that God created the world out of love as a gift to the people He created. They will
explore the natural gifts given to humankind to oversee and manage Earth.

• that God made a covenant with Noah, Abraham, and Moses and promised to send
a saviour for His people. They will learn that throughout history, God has shown He
loves us unconditionally.

• that Jesus was sent to save us from sin and to show us God’s eternal love. They
will come to know Jesus as Saviour and as King.

• that the saints can show us how to live our lives like Jesus. They will learn that
children can be models of holiness and an example to all.

As the first educators of your child, we value your support. Throughout the
program there will be opportunities for you to join us at school and to support
your child through some activities at home. Please talk with your child about
what he or she is learning in the classroom. Share in your child’s experiences

delivered through the Internet. We encourage you to share some prayer time
with your child as part of your family routine.
