This task will be completed individually and is designed to have students demonstrate an
application of some of the concepts and skills acquired in Unit 1.

You will be creating two graphs in Desmos with the following criteria:

Graph #1: [ / 2 A]
● Degree 4 function
● 3 x-intercepts
● Positive leading coefficient
MHF4U Unit 1 Task

● function: y=(x+2)(x+7)2(x+5)
Graph #2: 5 [ / 2 A]
● Degree 5 function
● 5 x-intercepts
● Negative leading coefficient
● function: -(x-1)(x+2)(x-3)(x+4)(x-4)

Make sure to share the desmos graph as well as write the equation and draw a quick sketch
of each on your solution document.

You will also need to answer the following questions for each graph:
i) What is the domain of the function? [Graph 1: /1K Graph 2: /1K]

ii) What is the range of the function? (You can use your desmos graph to find the max/min)
[Graph 1: /1K Graph 2: /1K]

iii) Calculate the average rate of change over any two points on your graph (you pick!).
Describe your solution in terms of whether the function is increasing or decreasing over
that interval and at what rate. [Graph 1: /2A Graph 2: /2A]

iv) Calculate the instantaneous rate of change at a point on both graphs where it is
increasing. Describe how your solution verifies that the function is increasing at that
point. [Graph 1: /2I Graph 2: /2I]

v) Calculate the instantaneous rate of change at any local max or min on both graphs.
Describe your solution. [Graph 1: /2I Graph 2: /2I]
