OVERVIEW
Obesity is a condition that is associated with abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the
body that presents a risk to a person’s medical health. It is referred to as a chronic disease that is
cause mainly by lifestyle choices and poor personal hygiene. Obesity is a social issue that
negatively affects people especially students in schools. Due to this, the complex disease
increases the risk of other diseases such as diabetes mellitus.
Statement of problem
Why is obesity considered a chronic disease and it’s relationship with diabetes
mellitus?

Research objectives
1. To assess the prevalence of obesity among students of 10FER of the Ferncourt
Institution.

2. To identify the contributing factor of obesity and why it is progressive.

3. To investigate the link of obesity to diabetes mellitus.

Methodology
The researcher conducted a survey in the form of a questionnaire to obtain the essential information needed
to investigate and accurately give a response to the objectives as well as an interview to further give information
related to the objectives. A questionnaire is a data collection instrument featuring a series of questions which
asks for information from a targeted audience correlated to a specific topic while an interview is a process taken
practically to also gather information on a topic. The questionnaire was softcopy and shared among 20 students
of 10FER over the internet, composing a total of 15 closed ended questions associated with obesity. However,
the main focus was on the percentage of students who are diagnosed with the disease and the contributing factor
which is likely used to develop the disease. Examples included were: age, BMI, body mass, height, eating
pattern, sleep schedules etc. Additionally, a different batch of students consisting of 12, were interviewed with
10 questions focusing mainly on if the condition is genetic, how is diabetes mellitus and obesity linked, changes
in the body after contracting the disease and how it is chronic. The questionnaire and interview were chosen
because the researcher felt the need to have data collected through interaction and interpretation based off the
10FER students. The questionnaire was easily retrievable, inexpensive, easy to fill out and intelligible. On the
other hand, the researcher gained rich and detailed data from the interviewee and the interview cost little to
nothing pertaining to money.
LIMITATION
Furthermore, the questionnaire took approximately 1 and half days to be obtain by the researcher and not all
copies were completed and answered properly.
1. The researcher only retrieved 13 softcopy completed forms out of a total of 20 questionnaires. This
limited the researcher’s data collection quantity.
2. Not all answers were answered correctly on the questionnaire. Due to this, the information was tampered
and made the researcher confused.
3. The interview was time consuming and not all answers made scientific sense. Because of this the
researcher took two days to gather the information but didn’t obtain as much as needed from the
interview.
