1. The sum of the reciprocals of Rehman’s ages, (in years) 3 years ago and 5 years from now is 3. Find
his present age.

2. In a class test, the sum of Shefali’s marks in Mathematics and English is 30. Had she got 2 marks
more in Mathematics and 3 marks less in English, the product of their marks would have been 210.
Find her marks in the two subjects.

3. The difference of squares of two numbers is 180. The square of the smaller number is 8 times the
larger number. Find the two numbers.

4. Sum of the areas of two squares is 468 𝑚2. If the difference of their perimeters is 24 m, find the
sides of the two squares.

5. Find the roots of the quadratic equation: 4𝑥 2 − 4𝑝𝑥 + (𝑝2 − 𝑞 2 ) = 0

6. Find the roots of the quadratic equation given as 2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 4 = 0 by applying the quadratic
formula.

roots.

51. Two water taps together can fill a tank in 1 7 hours. The tap with longer diameter takes 2 hours less

52. A school decided to award prizes to the most punctual and the most obedient student. The sum of
the two prizes is ₹150 and their product is ₹5600. Find the prize money for punctuality and
obedience.

53. The length of a hall is 5 m more than its breadth. If the area of the floor of the hall is 84 𝑚2 , what
are the length and the breadth of the hall?

54. Three consecutive natural numbers are such that the square of the middle number exceeds the
difference of the squares of the other two by 60. Find the numbers.

55. Some students planned a picnic. The total budget for food was 2,000. But 5 students failed to attend
the picnic and thus the cost of food for each member increased by 20. How many students attended
the picnic and how much did each student pay for the food?

56. A two digit number is four times the sum of the digits. It is also equal to 3 times the product of digits.
Find the number.

57. The difference of mother’s age and her daughter’s age is 21 years and the twelfth part of the product
of their ages is less than the mother’s age by 18 years. Find their ages.

A.P.
1. Which term of the AP 121, 117, 113 … is its first negative term?

2. A contract on construction job specifies a penalty for delay of completion beyond a certain date as
follows: ₹200 for the first day, ₹250 for the second day, ₹300 for the third day, etc., the penalty for
each succeeding day being ₹50 more than for the preceding day. How much money the contractor
has to pay as penalty, if he has delayed the work by 30 days.

Heights and Distance


1. If a tower 30m high, casts a shadow 10√3 𝑚 long on the ground, then what is the angle of elevation
of the sun?

2. A man rowing a boat away from a lighthouse 150 m high takes 2 minutes to change the angle of
elevation of the top of lighthouse from 45° to 30°. Find the speed of the boat. (Use √3 = 1.732)

3. The angle of elevation of a jet fighter from point A on ground is 60°. After flying 10 seconds, the
angle changes to 30°. If the jet is flying at a speed of 648 km/hour, find the constant height at which
the jet is flying.

4. Two ships are there in the sea on either side of a lighthouse in such a way that the ships and the
lighthouse are in the same straight line. The angles of depression of two ships are observed from
the top of the lighthouse are 60° and 45° respectively. If the height of the lighthouse is 200 m, find
the distance between the two ships. (Use √3 = 1.732)

5. From a window (60 metres high above the ground) of a house in street the angles of elevation and
depression of the top and the foot of another house on opposite side of street are 60° and 45°
respectively. Show that the height of the opposite house is 60(1 + √3) metres.

6. Two boats approach a light house in mid-sea from opposite directions. The angles of elevations of
the top of the lighthouse from two boats are 30° and 45° respectively. If the distance between two
boats is 100 m, find the height of the lighthouse.

7. A TV tower stands vertically on a bank of a canal. From a point on the other bank of a canal. From a
point on the other bank directly opposite the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is
60° from a point 20 m away from this point on the same bank the angle of elevation of the top of
the tower is 30°.

i. Find the height of the tower

8. A moving boat observed from the top of a 150 m high cliff, moving away from the cliff. The angle of
depression of the boat changes from 60° to 45° in 2 minutes. Find the speed of the boat.

9. The angle of elevation of an aeroplane from a point on the ground is 60°. After a flight of 15 seconds,
the angle of elevation changes to 30°. If the aeroplane is flying at a constant height of 1500√3 m
find the speed of the plane in km/hr.

10. A tower stands vertically on the ground. From a point on the ground 100 m away from the foot of
the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 45°. Find the height of the tower.

11. The length of a string between a kite and a point on the ground is 85 m. If the string makes an angle
𝜃 with the ground level such that tan 𝜃 = 15⁄8 then find the height of the kite from the ground.
Assume that there is no slack in the string.

12. The lower window of a house is at a height of 2 m above the ground and its upper window is 4 m
vertically above the lower window. At certain instant the angles of elevation of a balloon from these
windows are observed to be 60° and 30° respectively. Find the height of the balloon above the
ground.

13. A man on the deck of a ship, 12 m above water level, observes that the angle of elevation of the top
of a cliff is 60° and the angle of depression of the base of the cliff is 30°. Find the distance of the cliff
from the ship and the height of the cliff. (Use √3 = 1.732)

14. Marine Insight uses extensive utilization of wind energy to move a vessel in the seawater. They
allow the towing kite to gain a height of anything between 100 metres - 300 metres. The sailing kite
is made in such a way that it can be raised to its proper elevation and then brought back with the
help of a 'telescopic mast' that enables the kite to be raised properly and effectively.
Based on the following figure, answer the question that follows:

i. In the given figure, if sin 𝜃 = cos(3𝜃 − 30°) where 𝜃 and 3𝜃 − 30° are acute angles, then
find the value of 𝜃
ii. What should be the length of the rope of the kite sail in order to pull the ship at the angle
𝜃 (calculated above) and be at a vertical height of 150 m?

15. As observed from the top of a 75 m high lighthouse from the sea-level, the angles of depression of
two ships are 30° and 45°. If one ship is exactly behind the other on the same side of the lighthouse,
find the distance between two ships.

16. Basant Kumar is a farmer in a remote village of Rajasthan. He has a small square farm land. He
wants to do fencing of the land so that stray animals may not enter his farmland. For this, he wants
to get the perimeter of the land. There is a pole at one corner of this field. He wants to hang an effigy

on the top of it to keep birds away. He standing in one corner of his square field and observes that
the angle subtended by the pole in the corner just diagonally opposite to this corner is 60°. When
he retires 80 m from the corner, along the same straight line, he finds the angle to be 30°.

i. Find the length of his square field so that he can buy material to do the fencing work
accordingly.
ii. Find the height of the pole too so that he can arrange a ladder accordingly to put an effigy
on the pole.

17. If the angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at a distance of 4 m and 9 m from the
base of the tower and in the same straight line with it are complementary, find the height of the
tower.

18. A ladder rests against a wall at an angle 𝛼 to the horizontal. Its foot is pulled away from the wall
through a distance a, so that it slides a distance b down the wall making an angle 𝛽 with the
horizontal. Show that

is 𝑏 tan 𝛼 cot 𝛽

21. The angle of elevation of an aeroplane from a point on the ground is 45°. After flying for 15 s, the
angle of elevation changes to 30°. If the aeroplane if flying at a constant height of 2500 m, then find
the average speed of the aeroplane.

22. A man on the top of a vertical tower observes a car moving at a uniform speed coming directly
towards it. If it takes 18 minutes for the angle of depression to change from 30° to 60°, how soon
after this will the car reach the tower?

23. The angle of depression of two ships from an aeroplane flying at the height of 7500 m are 30° and
45°. If both the ships are in the same that one ship is exactly behind the other, find the distance
between the ships.

24. A girl on a ship standing on a wooden platform, which is 50 m above water level, observes the angle
of elevation of the top of a hill as 30° and the angle of depression of the base of the hill as 60°.
Calculate the distance of the hill from the platform and the height of the hill.

25. The angles of depression of the top and bottom of an 8 m tall building from top of a multi-storeyed
building are 30º and 45º, respectively. Find the height of multi-storey building and distance
between two buildings.

26. The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 120 m above a lake is 30° and the angle of depression
of its reflection in the lake is 60°. Find the height of the cloud.

27. The person standing on the bank of river observes that the angle of elevation of the top of a tree
standing on opposite bank is 60° . When he moves 30 m away from the bank, he finds the angle of
elevation to be 30°. Find the height of tree and width of the river.

28. Two poles of equal heights are standing opposite to each other on either side of the road which is
80 m wide. From a point P between them on the road, the angle of elevation of the top of a pole is
60° and the angle of depression from the top of the other pole of point P is 30°. Find the heights of
the poles and the distance of the point P from the poles.

29. A boy standing on a horizontal plane finds a bird flying at a distance of 100 m from him at an
elevation of 30°. A girl standing on the roof of a 20 m high building, finds the elevation of the same
bird to be 45°. The boy and the girl are on the opposite sides of the bird. Find the distance of the
bird from the girl. (Given √2 = 1.414)

30. The tops of two towers of height 𝑥 and 𝑦, standing on level ground, subtend angles of 30° and 60°
respectively at the centre of the line joining their feet, then find 𝑥 ∶ 𝑦.

31. If the height of a tower and distance of the point of observation from its foot both are increased by
