CULTURAL FESTIVAL
As part of its mission, Katara, The Cultural Village of Doha, aims at spreading awareness about the importance of the signicant contribution of every culture and civilization to the entire worlds development. We seek through our enriching events to reduce the cultural gap between civilizations and re-forge the cultural connection between nations through the power of knowledge and arts. This is why Katara has the enormous pleasure of cooperating with Latin American Embassies to the State of Qatar to create the First Latin American Cultural Festival in Doha. This Festival will be organized in a yearly basis at Katara to show the similarities of the Latin American Cultures to the Qatari one as well as their richness and diversity. I would like to reafrm my deepest gratitude of the Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela for their valuable support and cooperation. It was thanks to them that we were able to come up with an extensive and varied program that integrates musical and dancing shows with performing arts and lm. Latin America is a region with an impressive cultural diversity, normally unknown to foreigners. This region counts with a rich variety of rithms, dances, traditions, avors and so much more! Join us and discover the joyful atmosphere that has made the Latin Americans so popular throughout the history of arts. Francisco Pancho Amat is a Cuban musician, acknowledged master of the Cuban tres, a plucked instrument. Born in Havana province in 1950, Amat studied music formally and founded the group Manguar in 1971. He went on to study arrangement with Orquesta Aragn leader Rafael Lay, and elevated tres-playing to a new level by applying theory and technique gleaned from jazz and trova forms. Actually, he is the band leader of El Cabildo del Son.

JOHNNY VENTURA DOMINICAN REPUBLIC


Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano, known as Johnny Ventura, is today a top player in the Latin American music scene, as well as in Tropical music history, being one of the few Latin American artists of the world that has managed to record 103 albums. A dedicated artist, possessor of an enviable voice with unbelievable hip movements, his peculiar Merengue style and interpretation of song has carried him, next to his Orchestra, to be presented in the best dance arenas of our planet. Evidence of his excellent artistic trajectory is the Latin American Grammy he got for one of his latest albums "Sin Desperdicio".

Circuba is Cuba national circus and is associated with the Cuban National Circus School founded on 1968. Circuba's show consists of the best of a "traditional circus": artists performing breath-taking acts such as tightrope walking, acrobatics on rollerskates and unicycles, jugglers, hoopers, aerial silk and, of course, clowns. "The circus is the theatre of the street," explains Rolando Rodrguez Romero, Circuba's director. "Young people, old people, everyone likes this kind of show."

Dois lhos de Francisco A Histria de Zez di Camargo e Luciano, 2005, Dir.: Breno Silveira, 132 min, Drama, with: ngelo Antnio, Dira Paes and Mrcio Kieling. The story of Francisco, a very simple and poor man whose dream was to see his children become country music stars, and who made all the efforts to make it happen. This lm is based on the true story of the two Brasilian musicians Zez di Camargo and his brother Luciano. The lm was one of Brazil's most successful in the last twenty years and the biggest box-ofce draw of 2005.

Viva Cuba, 2005, Dir.: Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti, 80 min, Comedy Drama, with: Mal Tarrau Broche, Jorge Milo and Luisa Mara Jimnez Rodrquez. Malu and Jorgito, two young Cuban pre-teens, have sworn each other friendship for life in spite of the hatred between their two families. When Malu's grandmother dies and her mother decides to move abroad, Malu and Jorgito run away to seek the one piece of hope that can keep them together. Their journey will lead them across Cuba, to the utmost tip of the island...

Iluminados por el Fuego, 2005, Dir.: Tristn Bauer, 100 min, drama Adventure, with: Gastn Pauls, Pablo Riva, Csar Albarracn. The suicide of an old soldier buddy brings up some old memories for an Argentinian man. This lm won several awards in international festivals: the Special Prize of the Jury in San Sebastin Film Festival (Spain), Grand Coral First Prize in Havana Film Festival, the Goya of Best Spanish Language Foreign Film in Spain, etc.

FAMLIA ASSAD BRAZIL 7:00 p.m. Drama Theater


The famed Brazilian-born Sergio and Odair Assad, acclaimed for their brilliance in the classical, jazz, and Latin repertoires, have been called the best two-guitar team in existence (Washington Post). They invited their sister Badi Assad - vocalist, guitarist and percussionist (a brilliant display of innovation, imagination and skill, she redenes solo guitar performance says the Los Angeles Times) to compose a quintet with the singer Carolina Assad (Odair's daughter) and Clarice Assad (Srgio's daughter) who is a talented composer, pianist and singer. Together they present a program that explores the rhythmic similarities that tie Middle Eastern music (their ancestral roots) with the music of Brazil. Beside Brazilian tunes, their concert features new pieces inspired on Middle Eastern music that have been specially created for this occasion by Sergio and Clarice Assad.

TANGO VIVO URUGUAY 9:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Tabar Leyton, Gabriela Morgare and Francisco Falco (voices), Mayra Hernndez (piano), Gabriel Rodrguez (contrabass), Sergio Astengo (bandonen) and Andrs Poli Rodrguez y Gabriel Federico (guitars). The Grupo TANGOvivo intends to transform itself into a faithful representative of the tradition, the new contributions and the revaluation that Tango has experimented. Through the last years the members of the orchestra have taken part in the most important and newest representations of the current tanguera scene.

SERENATA GUAYANESA VENEZUELA 7:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Since its founding in 1971 in Ciudad Bolivar, this group is the true heir of the famous Quinteto Contrapunto. Serenata Guayanesa has earned a long-lasting place in the heart of the Venezuelan people thanks to the authenticity and beauty it puts in the interpretation of the musical folklore of the country, as well as traditional and contemporary music for children or Christmas songs. Its professionalism and constant research work on Venezuelan musical forms have led this group to show the world one of the best examples of the country's traditions.

RUBEN RADA URUGUAY 9:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Ruben Negro Rada integrates Uruguays national genre, candombe, in his musical creations.This traditional style, marked by complex rhythms laid down by three drums and costumed dancers, also has a history in Argentina as an expression of black identity but, along with that nations black population, has largely disappeared there. Rada wants to prevent this from happening in Uruguay. His promotion of candombe is at once a spirited act of dedication to his countrys 180,000-strong black community. In his eclectic art, popular sounds from all over the world with his native musical culture and African heritage are combined.

CARIBBEAN GEMS CLASSICAL CONCERT DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 7:00 p.m. Opera House
A classical concert by talented musicians performing Dominican and Latin Music under the direction of famous Dominican composer and director of the Dominican National Symphonic Orchestra, Jose Antonio Molina, with the participation of Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Jose Antonio Molina is an award-winning conductor of classical music and one of today's foremost orchestral and operatic conductors in Latin America. This concert will present some of the most representative compositions of the Dominican music written by Jose Antonio Molina himself and some other renowned Dominican musician composers.

BALLET FOLKLRICO NACIONAL EL SALVADOR 7:00 p.m. Drama Theater


The National Folkloric Ballet of El Salvador was organized since 1977 in the Salvadoran Institute of Tourism (ISTU). It is born with the aim of reclaiming and promoting Salvadoran customs and traditions. The Folkloric Ballet rst started doing a tour by the national territory. Today, it has shown the beauty of the dance and folkloric music in various countries of Central America and the United States of America.

EDITUS COSTA RICA 9:00 pm Drama Theater


Editus is a Costa Rican musical group that merges modern and traditional jazz, new age, classical music and the authentic sounds of Latin America. This is the only three-time Grammy award-winning band from Costa Rica. In addition to their great artistic talent, the group has shown their active role in humanitarian causes with the foundation of the Editus Academy of Arts, a project that provides scholarships to poor children.

BANDA DE CONCIERTOS DE LIMN COSTA RICA 7:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Founded in 1906, la Banda de Conciertos de Limn has played an important part in the limonense society through history. Its mission is to offer rst level musical artistic presentations that contribute to the cultural development of the province and the country, and also foments the education and entertainment of the public, doing emphasis in the rescue and diffusion of afro-Costa Rican and Latin American repertoire. At the moment, it is under the direction of Master Juan Carlos Meza Solano.

BRAZILIAN CARNIVAL BRAZIL 9:00 p.m. Drama Theater


A typical Brazilian samba show and other rhythms, as lambada and maculel, among others, inspired by the great parade of Brazilian carnival Schools of Samba. The show will present a costumed parade, master and banner-bearer, singers, percussionists and dancers, besides a demonstration of one of the worldwide known martial arts, the capoeira.

CHEO HURTADO VENEZUELA 7:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Cheo Hurtado is one of the most celebrated virtuoso performers of the cuatro, whose extremely agile strumming technique is currently believed to be unsurpassed. He also plays mandolin, bandola and guitar. With his international success, he has contributed decisively to the renewal and internationalization of the Venezuelan cuatro.

TANGO METROPOLIS ARGENTINA 9:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Tango Metropolis is a highly innovative tango show created by Daniel Binelli, Pilar Alvarez, and Claudio Hoffmann. It adds new musical and choreographic forms of tango, dynamically and theatrically expressed, to the themes of the traditional repertoire. The artists dance with all the force, vigour, expressiveness and mystery of avant-garde music contained in the beat and rhythm of Buenos Aires. Tango Metropolis portrays love stories, encounters and farewells lled with intense moments of passion and seduction, using the language of tango.

2:00 p.m. Opera House Llevarte al Mar, 2010, Dir.: Jorge Dalton, 90 min, Documentary, with: Guillermo Anderson. A musical trip through History and Culture of the Ceiba, the port city on the northern coast of Honduras. A route along with the famous Honduran singer Guillermo Anderson, that is the proposal from Llevarte al Mar, a documentary lm that portrays the feelings and the thoughts of the musician, while it crosses the Caribbean coast and its garfunas songs.

MOVIE: TOCAR Y LUCHAR VENEZUELA 4:00 p.m. Opera House


Tocar y luchar, 2006, Dir.: Beto Arvelo, 70 min, Documentary, with: Claudio Abbado, Jose Antonio Abreu and Daniel Arias This documentary presents the captivating story of the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System - an incredible network of hundreds of orchestras formed within most of Venezuelas towns and villages. Once a modest program designed to expose rural children to the wonders of music, the system has become one of the most important and beautiful social phenomena in modern history. To Play and to Fight is an inspirational story of courage, determination, ambition and love showing us that only those who dream can achieve the impossible.

MOVIE: EL BAO DEL PAPA URUGUAY 6:00 p.m. Opera House


El Bao del Papa, 2007, Dir.: Csar Charlone and Enrique Fernndez, 90 min, Drama, with: Csar Troncoso, Virginia Mndez and Mario Silva. The scene takes place in 1988 in Melo, a poor Uruguayan country village near the Brazilian border. Several men earn their living from contraband, mostly transported on bicycles. One of them, Beto, is getting too old for heavy freights but hopes to earn a motorbike. The idea is to build and charge money for the use of a proper lavatory at the occasion of the rst-ever papal visit to Uruguay. This lm has been selected for the Best Foreign Film competition at the Oscar (US).

JORGE BEN JOR BRAZIL 8:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Jorge Menezes, known in the whole world as Jorge Ben Jor, is a Brazilian popular musician. His characteristic style fuses samba, funk, and rock into samba-rock, with lyrics that blend humor and satire with often esoteric subjects. Without complications or contradictions this is how Jorges music is. With great hits such as Mas que nada, made internationally know by Sergio Mendez, Jorge Ben Jor is denitely one of the biggest stars of the Brazilian music scene.

MOVIE: UNA SOMBRA AL FRENTE PERU 5:00 p.m. Drama Theater


Una sombra al Frente, 2007, Dir.: Augusto Tamayo San Romn, 135 min, Drama, with: Diego Bertie, Vanessa Saba and Gonzalo Molina. This lm is inspired by the novel of the Peruvian writer Augusto Tamayo Vargas. Peru, at the beginnings of century XX. The young engineer Enrique Aet aims to connect the Amazonian forest with the rest of Peru. This lm has been preselected for the Oscar 2008 of Best Non English language lm.

MOVIE: A OJOS CERRADOS COSTA RICA 8:00 p.m. Drama Theater


A Ojos Cerrados, 2010, Dir.: Hernn Jimnez, 65 min, Drama, with: Carol Sanabria, Paulo A. Soto, Anabelle Ulloa. Gabo and Maga are two grandfathers who do not live the one without the other. Between quarrels, complaints and the routine, they adore each other. Their granddaughter Delia grew up with them, and they are together an inseparable family. When the grandmother dies suddenly, Gabo and Delia feel very lonely and only want to close their eyes to invent a new reality. Granddaughter and grandfather will undertake together a trip towards the stranger, where they will look for and re-invent their friendship.
