3 Mathematics For Our World
3 Mathematics For Our World
Introduction
We have seen in the previous lessons how evident mathematics is in the natural world,
specifically in how the patterns that we observe in nature follow logical and mathematical
structures. It is therefore important that we learn mathematical concepts and apply them in
solving societal problems.
For the world to make sense of all available information, it needs mathematical tools to help
make sound analysis and better decisions. Consider the following instances:
Large stores and supermarkets can gather data on the shopping habits of its customers
and make necessary adjustments to drive more sales
Scientists can plot bird migration routes to help conserve endangered animal
populations
Facebook or Twitter can crunch all online postings using software to gauge netizens,
sentiments on a particular issue
Department of Health and the World Health Organization has recorded the total COVID-
19 positive cases since the outbreak of the pandemic
Medical researchers are able to determine the approximate temperature when the
Corona Virus slow down reproducing exponentially
Social researchers are able to frame a formula or a model for population control in the
next 50 years
Countries across continents are signing joint agreements to help control carbon
emissions in tolerable amount in order to fight global garming
Evaluation
1) Argue about the statement, “Mathematics can either make or break the world”. Give two
examples on how Mathematics makes the world and another two examples on how it
breaks the world.
