RENTON.- State Sen-
ator Shirley Turner
(D-Mercer and Hunt-
erdon) and Assem-
blywoman Verlina
Reynolds-Jackson (D-Mercer and
Hunterdon) recently were award-
ed the grade of A for their legisla-
tive performance by the NJ Black
Empowerment Coalition Action
Network. The NJ Black Empower-
ment Coalition Action Network, a
new statewide advocacy group, de-
veloped a scorecard to rate all 120
members of the NJ Legislature in
an attempt to hold those members
more accountable to the state’s Black
communities.
State Senator Turner and Assembly-
woman Reynolds-Jackson were just
two of nine of the120 members to re-
ceive the grade of A. That nine repre-
sent just 8 percent of the total NJ Leg-
islature. The Coalition gave 25 percent
of the members the grade of D.
Tomas Varela Jr., the Executive Di-
rector of the NJ Black Empower-
ment Coalition Action Network,
said he wants the grades to act as a
guide for New Jerseyans: “We hope
the scorecard becomes an educa-
tional tool for everyday citizens so,
when they are looking to advocate,
Gov. Murphy signs a legislation to
combat gun trafficking

RENTON.- Governor Phil
Murphy signed legislation
that established strict liabili-
ty criminal penalties for gun
traffickers when an illegally
trafficked firearm provided by them is
used in a crime that results in serious or
significant bodily injury or death.
Similarly, a person who commits a fire-
arm trafficking violation resulting in
serious or significant bodily injury may
be charged with a second-degree crime.
The newly enacted law will also allow NJ
prosecutors to charge out-of-state traf-
fickers, who have supplied around 80
percent of guns used for crimes in NJ,
for the harm their illegal out-of-state
conduct causes in the state.
“Far too many New Jerseyans live with the
daily fear that people in their communi-
ties who cannot legally possess guns can

they feel more empowered and they
feel more informed on what ques-
tions they can ask,” Varela said.
According to Varela, the NJ Black
Empowerment Coalition Action
Network, a charitable nonprofit, will
focus on policies closing the racial
wealth gap facing Black NJ resi-
dents, while the action network, an
affiliated nonprofit focused on ad-
vocacy, will communicate the letter
grades to voters, with other electoral
advocacy expected in the future.
The group says legislation that lines
up with its mission rarely advanced
through the Legislature’s committees.
Of the 997 bills they examined for
their report cards, 75 percent never
saw a committee vote. Those include
bills that would bar police depart-
ments from hiring officers dismissed
from their last job over official mis-
conduct and a bill that would create a
state-level voting rights act.
“Bills that would help support mar-
ginalized communities are being
left and not being moved forward,
and I think that is a concern, for the
state of NJ,” Varela said. The group
compiled scores by looking at nearly
1,000 bills spread across seven topics
— education, economics, housing,
health care, criminal justice, envi-
ronmental justice, and open and fair
illegally obtain firearms and cause great
harm,” said Governor Murphy. “This bill
allows us to hold those who illegally traffic
those guns accountable for the harm that
those weapons are used to cause. With to-
day’s new law, New Jersey will become the
first state in the nation to go after illegal
gun traffickers in this way. This is yet an-
other historic step to protect our children
and families from gun violence, and we
will continue to support long-term solu-
tions that will break the cycle of violence
once and for all.”
Attending the bill signing was Trenton
Police Director Steve Wilson. “This
law sends a clear message to those who
would participate and/or profit from the
illegal distribution of firearms, that they
can now be held accountable for the in-
juries sustained and the lives lost due
to gun violence,” stated Police Director
Steve Wilson.

ed for them, either in committee or
on their chamber’s floor. Legislators
who voted against a chosen bill in

legal traffickers accountable for their ac-

RENTON.- September
15th to October 15th
is National Hispanic
Heritage Month. The
month-long celebration
recognizes the valuable contribu-
tions made by residents of Latinx/
Hispanic descent to all aspects of
American life, including leadership
in public service, sports, business,
the arts, science, technology, educa-
tion and civil and human rights.
Hispanic Heritage Month, was first
observed in 1968, begins each year
on September 15th. September 15th
was chosen as the starting point for
the celebration of Hispanic Heri-
tage Month because it is the anni-
versary of the independence of five
Latin American countries: Costa
Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Hon-
duras and Nicaragua. In addition,
Mexico and Chile celebrate their
independence days on September
16 and September 18.
Latinx/Hispanics have had a pro-
found and positive influence in the
US through their strong commit-
ment to family, faith, hard work
and service.Latinx/ Hispanics have
shaped and enhanced US society
with centuries-old traditions that
reflect the multiethnic and multicul-
tural customs of their communities.
Hispanic Heritage Month provides
a special opportunity for educators,
schools, as well as public and private

institutions to focus on the many
Latinx/Hispanic Americans whose
lives and works have shaped the his-
tory and fabric of American society.
The land and countries where Span-
ish and Portuguese are the primary
languages in the Caribbean, Mex-
ico, Central and South America
were originally inhabited by vari-
ous indigenous Indians groups. In
the 15th and 16th centuries, Span-
ish and Portuguese colonists from
Spain and Portugal brutally overran
the indigenous Indians subjugating
them to European conquest. With-
in a few years of the brutal conquest
Spanish and Portuguese colonists
brought African slaves to work the
conquered lands.
There were 11.2 million Africans
who survived the Middle Passage
and landed in the New World, and of
that 11.2 million, only 450,000 came
to the US. All the rest went south of
Miami as it were. Brazil had almost
5 million Africans.
Brazil has the second largest Black
population — Black being defined
by people of African descent in the
way that it is defined in the US. It is
second only to Nigeria. Other His-
panic countries with largest African
populations today include Domini-
can Republic, Cuba, Colombia, Ven-
ezuela and Ecuador. Approximately
one hundred years prior to enslaved
Africans being brought to the colo-
nial US in 1619, enslaved Africans
were brought to the Caribbean and
South American.
This mix of indigenous Indians, Eu-
ropeans and Africans developed the
rich history and culture of what is
called Hispanic culture. The African
influence was significant and can be
found in the customs, music, reli-
gion and other aspects of Hispanic
culture. Such popular dances and
music as merengue, rumba, salsa,
samba were heavily influenced by
African dance movements and Afri-
can music.

 Black And Hispanic/Latinx Youth Suicides

t’s no secret that Black
and Hispanic/Latinx
youth – particularly teens
– are committing suicide
at record levels. Accord-
ing to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, sui-
cide rates have increased by 30
percent since 1999 and nearly
45,000 lives were lost to suicide
in 2016 alone.
A June 2019 study conducted
by the Journal of Communi-
ty Health revealed that suicide
deaths among Black females
aged 13 to 19 rose 182 percent
between 2001 and 2017, while
the rate among Black teen
males rose 60 percent during
that same period.
Mental healthcare
experts and others have
tried to determine why
Black and Hispanic/
Latinx increasingly are
choosing to end their
lives. Theories have
centered on racism,
social media and
wealth driven,
materialistic cultural
influences.
In 2019, suicide was the second
leading cause of death for His-
panics, ages 15 to 34. Suicide
attempts for Hispanic/Latinx
girls, grades 9-12, were 30 per-
cent higher than for non-His-
panic/Latinx white girls in the
same age group, in 2019.
Disparities in suicidal behav-
iors among U.S. teenagers,
particularly girls, have been
documented now for over two
decades. Since 1991, Centers
for Disease Control and Pre-
vention surveys consistently
show that adolescent Latinas
attempt suicide at rates much

higher than Black and non-His-
panic/Latinx, White girls.
Even with three decades of
surveys, no study has system-
atically compared Hispanic/
Latinx girls to other girls to un-
derstand Hispanic/Latinx girls’
propensity to suicidal behav-
ior. While family conflict often
accounts for suicide attempts
across adolescents, studies have
not shown what qualitative
differences in family dynam-
ics influence Hispanic/Latinx
daughters to attempt suicide
more than peers.
Past research literature does not
explain—in fact, it raises addi-
tional questions about—the de-
cades-old pattern of Hispanic/
Latinz girls attempting suicide
more often than other girls.
From 2015 to 2017, 52 percent
of Black teen males who died
from suicide used firearms, a
method with a fatality rate of
nearly 90 percent.
Another 34 percent used stran-
gulation or suffocation, which
has a fatality rate of about 60
percent.

Among the 204 Black teen fe-
males who died by suicide from
2015 to 2017, 56 percent used
strangulation or suffocation
and 21 percent used firearms,
according to the study. The rate
for black youths grew even as
the rate of suicide attempts by
teens in other racial and ethnic
groups fell.
Mental healthcare experts and
others have tried to determine
why Black and Hispanic/Latinx
increasingly are choosing to
end their lives. Theories have
centered on racism, social me-
dia and wealth driven, materi-
alistic cultural influences.
Whatever the reasons, the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention points out it’s
important to note that suicidal
thoughts or behaviors are both
damaging and dangerous and
should be treated as a psychiat-
ric emergency.
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention officials also
caution that those who have
suicidal thoughts should un-
derstand that it does not make
one weak or flawed.

The number of troubled teen-
agers who are cutters and deal-
ing with suicidal thoughts,
feelings, ideas, plans, and even
attempts of suicide has been in-
creasing significantly in the last
few years.
While suicide is a complicated
topic, it’s clear that the rise of
social media is one of the main
causes of the recent jump in
suicide rates.
The lack of treatment of men-
tal illness is the key factor to
why suicide is on the rise in
the Black and Hispanic/Latinx
communities. It will remain a
serious problem until individ-
ual Blacks and Hispanic/Lat-
inx as well as and the Black and
Hispanic/Latinx communities
as a whole recognize the need
to face mental illness head on
and be willing to accept treat-
ment.
The mental health of the Black
and Hispanic/Latinx communi-
ties is just as important as their
political, social and economic
health and well being.

race, a slew of Repub-
lican challengers to
President Joe Biden
have officially launched
campaigns for next year’s presi-
dential election. As former Pres-
ident Barack Obama once stated,
“elections have consequences.”
That was clearly the case with the
2016 presidential election.
It was an election however that
many decided to sit out and/or
cast protest votes. Many people
were not happy with the two major
candidates for president, Punch
Drunk and Damn Judy, so they
went third party or trout fishing.
The right to vote is
sacred and too many
people of color have
given their blood,
sweat, tears and lives
to be able to vote.
The result of that election was four
chaotic, insane years that saw the
nation become a world embarrass-
ment. It also saw the unnecessary
death of over 500,000 of its citi-
zens due to an irresponsible, irra-
tional and uncaring approach to a
pandemic. Because of the current
fragile state of US democracy, the
2024 election has the potential to
be one of the most consequential.

cult for Blacks, Latinx and other
people of color to vote.

trolled state legislatures seeking
to suppress the votes of people of
color, there are others seeking to
confuse and ultimately to suppress
voters of color from voting.

of color. Others who were born a
person of color pretending to be
relevant. Blacks, Latinxs and other
people of color must be aware and
on guard of the attempts of others
to confuse, alienate and disillusion
voting or voting foolishly. The dis-
information, misinformation and
lies have already begun. In some
cases, they never stopped after the
2016 campaign.
Blacks, Latinxs and other peo-
ple of color must be extremely
careful of taking what they read
or see on Facebook, Twitter now
called X, and other internet out-
lets. Much that is placed on so-
cial media outlets is just plain out
foul and evil.
People have actually lost their lies
from taking as gospel things that
they saw on Facebook. One such
case that comes to mind took
place early in 2020 when people
were just hearing about Covid. It
was spread on the internet that
Black people did not have to wor-
ry about Covid because the virus
did not affect Blacks.
There were Blacks that lost their
lives because they had read or had
someone tell them that Blacks had
nothing to fear about Covid. Was
it done accidentally or was it in-
tentional?

octubre es el Mes Na-
cional de la Herencia
Hispana. La celebra-
ción, que dura un mes, reconoce las
valiosas contribuciones realizadas
por los residentes de ascendencia la-
tina/hispana a todos los aspectos de
la vida estadounidense, incluido el
liderazgo en el servicio público, los
deportes, los negocios, las artes, la
ciencia, la tecnología, la educación y
los derechos civiles y humanos.

Los latinos/hispanos
han tenido una
influencia profunda y
positiva en los EE. UU.
a través de su fuerte
compromiso con la
familia, la fe, el trabajo
duro y el servicio.
El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, se
celebró por primera vez en 1968. Se
eligió el 15 de septiembre como pun-

l pasado 22 de agosto
se reportó un acciden-
te de tráfico en Oaxaca
que dejó varias perso-
nas fallecidas, algunos
medios reportan 16 muertos y 35
heridos, y otros medios reportan
18 fallecidos.
La mayoría de las víctimas fueron
identificadas como migrantes ve-
nezolanos que buscaban continuar
su trayecto hacia el norte del país y
posteriormente a Estados Unidos.
El accidente bloqueó la carretera
entre el estado de Oaxaca y Puebla
por casi nueve horas.
A principios del mes de agosto se
presentó otro accidente en la au-
topista del Pacífico, en el cual mu-
rieron 18 personas, entre las cua-
les había migrantes de la India y
de África. En el mes de julio tam-
bién otro accidente en la carretera
de Oaxaca cobró la vida de 29 per-
sonas (El País 22/08/2023; Animal
Político 05/07/2023).
Pueden existir muchas causas de
estos accidentes, se cree en que
los excesos de velocidad y las fa-
llas mecánicas son las principales
causas.

Villavicencio era un líder sindical
y periodista que se había destaca-
do por su denuncia de la filtración
del narcotráfico en los estamentos
oficiales de gobierno y había basa-
do la propuesta de su campaña en
afianzar la seguridad ciudadana a
través de la policía y el ejército.
Se estima que los grupos crimina-
les vinculados al narcotráfico alia-
dos con fuerzas políticas son los

nato. El periodista Christian Zuri-
ta tomó su lugar como candidato

Cerca de 100.000 policías y militares
vigilaron los lugares de votación y no
se registraron actos de violencia. No
obstante, los votos en el extranjero fue-

de Trenton y la familia Loja residentes en el condado de Mercer, se vistieron con los colores de su
bandera y salieron rumbo a la fiesta que reunió a la diáspora ecuatoriana que reside en el estado
jardín. Miembros de la familia Loja indicaron que son oriundos de Cañar-Ecuador y que están
felices de poder regresar a celebrar la Independencia de Ecuador en Trenton.
TRENTON.- El pequeño Carlos Cruz (centro de la foto) hizo su debut como “Altar Server” en la iglesia
católica Inmaculada Concepción el pasado domingo 27 de agosto. Carlitos de apenas 6 años, ese día estuvo
radiante, sus ojos vivaces dejaban ver las ganas que tenia de ser parte de la escolta que llevaba la imagen
que representa a Jesús. Todos sus compañeros le dieron la bienvenida y le motivaron. La función principal
del Altar Server es ayudar al sacerdote durante la celebración de la misa.
La banda del “Señor de Girón” participó por primera vez con su música
en el Festival Ecuatoriano realizado en la ciudad de Trenton este
día domingo 20 de agosto 2023.
