questions.
What I KNOW I WANT to know I LEARNED
Encourage the students to discuss
and share their thoughts on the
chart they have completed. After
filling out the first two columns, the
teacher will respond to any
questions listed in the "I WANT to (Students answers may vary)
know" column and facilitate an open
discussion. Finally, students will
complete the last column of the
chart.

To guide the discussion, consider

asking the following questions:
1. Can you share what you already
know about the topic?
2. What questions or curiosities do
you have about the topic?
3. Could you share any insights or
things you've learned after filling out
the chart?

Lesson Proper:

A. Explore
Mensuration, or the branch of
mathematics that deals with the
measurement of geometric figures,
can prove to be challenging for many
individuals. Along with this,
computing room rates, commissions,
and currency exchange rates can
also be considered complex
processes. However, these
calculations are essential in various
industries such as finance, real
estate, tourism, and the like. This
article will provide you with a guide
on how to efficiently compute
mensuration and calculate room
rates, commission, and currency
exchange rates. In Front Office
Services, understanding different
formulas for calculating area and
perimeter is crucial when dealing
with various situations such as room
size, carpeting requirements, and
space planning. Here are some
examples:
In Front Office Services, calculating
the cost of a guest's stay involves
several mathematical calculations.
Here are some example formulas
used to help determine the number
of nights booked, Nightly rate for
Deluxe room, discount, and Sales
Tax rate:

1. Number of Nights Booked: The

formula for calculating the number
of nights booked is relatively simple.
It is calculated by subtracting the
guest's check-out date from their
check-in date. For example, a guest
checks in on Monday and checks out
on Friday; that would be a four-night
stay.

2. Nightly Rate for Deluxe Room: The

nightly rate for a deluxe room varies
and is dependent on the hotel's
pricing policy. In general, it will be
stated per night, and the guest
cannot stay beyond the departure
date. The formula for calculating this
cost would be to multiply the
number of nights booked by the
nightly rate for the deluxe room, for
example, 5 nights x P200 = P1000.

3. Discount: Guests may qualify for

discounts depending on factors such
as seniority, loyalty, promotions, or
package deals. If applicable, a
discount is subtracted from the total
cost of the room. For instance,
applying a 10% discount on the
P1000 bill, reduces the total cost to
P900.

4. Sales Tax Rate: Sales tax is a

percentage of the total cost charged
by the hotel. The sales tax rate will
vary depending on the city, county,
or state in which the hotel operates.
The formula for calculating the tax is
to multiply the total cost (or net
amount after deducting the discount
if given) by the sales tax percentage,
usually stated on the invoice. For
example, if the tax rate is 12%, then
the sales tax on P900 bill would be
P108.

Overall, understanding the different

formulas for calculating the number
of nights booked, nightly rate for the
deluxe room, discount, and sales tax
rate is essential for individuals
working in Front Office Services, as
it assists in accurate and efficient
billing.
Sample Basic Computation
Problem: As a hotel receptionist,
you'll encounter diverse room
categories with fluctuating prices
throughout the year. A guest has
requested the preferable Deluxe
room for three nights at a standard
P450.00 nightly rate, but you may
present a 10% reduction if they
prepay for their stay. Subsequently,
10% sales tax will be added to the
final rate.

Answer:
Nightly rate for Deluxe room =
P450.00
Discount rate = 10% (Discounted
rate will be P405.00 after discount)
Number of nights booked = 3
Subtotal = Discounted rate x
Number of nights booked = P405.00
x 3 = P1215.00
Sales Tax rate = 10%
Sales Tax = Subtotal x Sales Tax rate
= P1215.00 x 10% = P121.50
Total rate = Subtotal + Sales Tax =
P1215.00 + P121.50 = P1336.50

Therefore, the total rate for the

guest's stay is P1336.50.

commission rate for the travel
agent who booked the Students: The final rate for the guest's three-
reservation, which is based on night stay in a Deluxe room would be calculated
the guest's subtotal before tax. as follows:

Nightly rate for Deluxe room = P250.00

Discounted rate = 20% * P250.00 = P50.00

(Discounted rate per night = P250.00 - P50.00 =
P200.00)

Total discounted rate for three nights = 3 *

P200.00 = P600.00

Sales tax = 13% of the discounted rate = 13% *

P600.00 = P78.00

Final rate for the guest's three-night stay in a

Deluxe room, including the 20% discount and
13% sales tax, would be P678.00.

Therefore, the guest's final rate for a three-night

stay in a Deluxe room, including the discount and
sales tax, would be P678.00.
