Formatting Guidelines for Semester Project Report

Structure of Report

The report must consist of following chapters:

1. Chapter 1 (Introduction): It must be of 5 pages (at least)


2. Chapter 2 (Literature Review): It must be of 5 pages (at least)
3. Chapter 3 (Methodology): its length may vary depending upon the
task assigned to your group; but in general, it must be about 10
pages.
4. Chapter 4 (Results and Discussions): it must be about 3-5 pages.
5. Chapter 5 (Conclusions): it must be about 1-2 pages.

Guidelines for writing report in MS Word

The report must follow strictly the following guidelines/instructions:

1. Page size must be “A4”>>Go to “Layout” Tab and set page size.
2. Pages should not be bordered.
3. There must be page number added at the bottom center.>>Go to
“Insert” tab to insert page number.
4. Each paragraph must not be smaller than about 10 lines, not more
than 15 lines. Each paragraph must be justified.
5. A line spacing of 1.5 must be followed throughout the text.
6. A default single spacing before and after the heading must be
chosen.
7. All text must be written in black color. No other color should be
used to highlight anything. All text (except headings and captions
of figures and tables) should be written in following style and size:

Font Style: Times New Roman

Font Size: 12

8. Different headings will have different font size which is discussed


below:
• The main title of the chapter (for example introduction,
literature review) will be written in Font Size 20, Bold, Times
New Roman
• Heading 1 will have Font Size 16, Bold, Times New Roman
• Heading 2 will have Font Size 14, Bold, Times New Roman
• Heading 3 will have Font Size 12, Bold, Times New Roman
All above headings must be given via headings menu (not
manually) in the “Home” tab. Any other subheading after
“Heading 3” will be simply written as text (12 size, bold); not
will be given via headings menu.

9. Captions of figures and tables will have font size of 10.


10. Figures should be centered, must be captioned below them
and caption should also be centered.
11. Tables should be centered, captioned above them, and
caption must be left aligned.
12. Figures and tables must not be captioned manually; but must
be captioned using “Reference>>Insert Caption” tab in MS Word
13. Captioning must be chapter wise e.g., the figures in Chapter 1
must be captioned as Figure 1.1, 1.2,1.3…..and the figures in
chapter 2 must be captioned as Figure 2.1,2.2.2.3…..Same method
should be followed for tables.
14. Any text/data written within the tables should also be of 10
font size.
15. The size of the images/Figures/Graphs should be as follows:
16. Width (14-15 cm) and length (7-8 cm depending upon
resolution)
