pages 233 to 236. "Cities are manifestations of human civilization" prof. Charanjit Singh Shah has a simple but bold intention to write the book Rethinking Smart and Sustainable Cities in India. This is a fascinating journey of human evolution and its continuous progress and development in human development and settlement. A purely technical book
intended for the noble profession of architect and planner, it spreads its wings to offer ordinary readers an understanding of human history, settlement and urban development. Cities initially developed in response to natural boundaries and then embraced trade, war, andand today based on ecological and sustainable concepts that offer a better
quality of life. We are probably in the quietest and most advanced stage of development since the beginning of human evolution on Earth. Most developing countries are approaching 0.7 HDI, which is considered "high human development", a measure established by the United Nations. The book shows the changing definitions of architecture and
urbanism, understanding the complexity of urbanism. In the Indian context, with the launch of the Smart Cities program in 2015, there is a lot of talk about technologically advanced and information and communication smart cities. As the author says, there is no sustainability standard per se. The more you respect Mother Earth, the more you learn to
create an organic structure and strive to connect with nature. The aim of the book is to explore and then design futuristic, smart and sustainable cities for India. The book is divided into eight chapters: Evolution of Human Settlements, Global Green Walking Cities, Transforming India's National Capital, Existing Sustainable Indian Cities, Futuristic
Smart and Sustainable Cities, Intermodality and Last Mile Connectivity, New Smart Cities and Sustainable Indian Smart Cities. Cities. As the name suggests, the first chapter describes the development of the settlement from prehistoric times to the present day; the road led through early civilizations. Chapter 2 briefly describes the concepts used in
global green cities such as London, Paris and Barcelona, along with the measures taken to make them walkable, bike friendly and liveable around the world. Chapter 3 describes the transformation of Delhi, the thousand-year-old capital of India. The challenges it faces over time and why it is one of the world's least sustainable cities. Worsening
environmental and lifestyle problems are explored in detail, and the author eloquently proposes micro-level mitigation and protective measures. Chapter 4 takes us to proven passive andused in the planning of the ancient city of Jaipur and the modern city of Chandigarh. Thanks to the perfect combination of science and professional architectural
practice, Prof. Shah implemented these discoveries and the associated concept of nature by designing the Jamshedpur 2057 plan, which he developed in collaboration with Fredrik Schwartz collaborators in the United States. In addition to industry, the community is at the heart of the planning of Jamshedpur. It's simply the opposite of the idea of a
central park and is intended to be "a city within a park within a city". Chapter 5 is an account of his extensive work in creating a green space and connecting with each other to create a walkable Jamshedpur. Chapter 6 focuses on intermodality and last-mile connectivity, which are key to building self-sufficient, connected neighborhoods. Most of our
cities are experiencing urban sprawl, which threatens land use and population density. Therefore, an integrated approach is very important. Chapter 7 describes the integrated planning strategies of the most influential pro-business cities such as GIFT, Dholera SIR in Gujarat, a pioneering pioneer state in India. Masdar in Abu Dhabi represents the
sustainable concept of the walled city and the use of cutting-edge technology to create a zero-carbon and zero-waste community in the deserts. Chapter 8 is the focus of the overall study and focuses on the translation of Indian Smart Cities for construction across India. Rural areas have been ignored and excluded from the smart city agenda, which we
as a rural nation cannot do. We need passive strategies in terms of topography, orientation, climate, appropriate materials and technologies leading to sustainable development. The book encourages early reading and continues to arouse interest. Rational planning at the micro and macro levels requires the optimal and desirable use of scarce natural
resources. Mixed-use, small autonomous communities and quarters are essential for a high quality of lifeinclusive, equitable access to affordable, safe and low-carbon products. The author successfully redefines sustainable and smart cities through pictorial illustrations and renderings. He has established a sequential order and is able to narrate
formally, explaining technical details with examples and case studies. The idea changed in my head: urban planning can help solve infrastructure and environmental problems. We must use urbanization as a positive force for social, economic and political development because "cities are the engine of growth". Although prof. Shah commanded
correctly, there are many, because there are too many disciplines that may not be suitable for the intended audience, except for planners. Others can enjoy the richness and dynamism of sustainable concepts, right up to intermodality and last-mile connectivity. Moreover, it is difficult to find a reference to the source data to support his opinion. It
doesn't make sense prof. Chess, but the topic he chose is very broad and topical. I think he could have informed us better about ancient Indian principles and strategies of sustainable planning from further case studies. The main objective of the book is to compare urban planning strategies and actions around the world and to redefine intelligent and
sustainable responses in the Indian context. I like the title Redefining India's Smart and Sustainable City. The author's own struggles with homelessness and scanty clothing while living in a refugee camp in Delhi after the partition of 1947 and such a fantastic transformation into a leading architect and planner gives me great respect for him. I met
him twice at the Indian Institute of Architects presentation and both times I was fortunate to learn from such a profound practitioner and great educator. However, I want to congratulate him on a wonderful job on this book. Showing 1-22 Start reviewApplied Physics Textbook Volume I Anshul rated it excellent 2022 Ankit marked it read on November
