Material needed
1 mechanical pliers 1 triple beam balance 1 alcohol burner 1 test tube rack
3 test tubes copper wire piece iron pieces HCl 10%solution
silver nitrate solution sodium chloride H2O2 solution raw potato

Procedure and Analysis

Part 1
Use your pliers to place a piece of wire over the flame (O2), and register your observations.

Cu + O2 ----------> CuO
Write down the observations and the balanced equations that took place in this activity, indicate
the type of reaction and add the corresponding symbols (heat, (aq), (s), (g), etc).
Balance equation :
2Cu + O2 = 2CuO
_________________________________________________________________________
Observations

When we put the wire in the fire, it change its color and got toast

_________________________________________________________________________
Type of reaction

synthesis
_________________________________________________________________________
When or how did we add the oxygen to the reaction?

It was necessary to generate a combustion and keep the flame

_________________________________________________________________________
Problem: If you used 3 moles of copper, how many moles of CuO were produced?

3 moles of CuO

Part 2
1. Put 20 drops of the hydrochloric acid solution in a test tube.
2. Carefully, drop one iron nail in the test tube so that it comes in contact with the acid.

Fe + HCl ------------> FeCl3 + H2

Write down the observations and the balanced equations that took place in this activity, indicate
the type of reaction and add the corresponding symbols (heat, (aq), (s), (g), etc).

Balanced equation:
2Fe +6HCl = 2FeCl3 + 3H2
________________________________________________________________________
Observations

It bubbled, changed color and part of the liquid was absorbed

_________________________________________________________________________
Type of reaction

single replacement
_________________________________________________________________________
What is the formula of the bubbles produced?

because it's an effect of the dissolution

_________________________________________________________________________
Problem: if you had 0.5 moles of iron, how many moles of FeCl 3 were produced?

0.5 moles of FeCl3

Part 3
Add 5 mL of water and 0.5 g of sodium chloride (table salt) in a perfectly clean test tube. Stir until
dissolved. Now add a few drops of the silver nitrate solution.

NaCl + AgNO3 --------------> NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)

Write down the observations and the balanced equations that took place in this activity, indicate
the type of reaction and write the corresponding symbols (heat), (aq), (s), (g), etc)

Balanced equation:

NaCl + AgNO3 --------------> NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)It doesn’t need to be balanced.
_________________________________________________________________________
Observations

the powder sank to the bottom of the tube and created a thick white layer at the top
_________________________________________________________________________
Type of reaction

Double replacement
_________________________________________________________________________
Which of the two products is the precipitate?

The Silver(I) chloride AgCl

____________________________________________________________________
Problem: If you used 0.5 moles of silver nitrate during the reaction, how many moles of
silver chloride were produced?

0.5 moles of silver chloride

Part 4
1. In one test tube, add carefully, 20 drops of Hydrogen Peroxide (H 2O2) solution.
2. Add a little piece of raw potato.

Catalase-peroxidase
H2O2 ---------------------------------> H2O + O2

Write down the observations and the balanced equations that took place in this activity, indicate
the type of reaction and add the corresponding symbols (heat, (aq), (s), (g), etc)

Balanced equation:
2H2O2 = 2H2O + O2
_________________________________________________________________________
Observations
Many bubbles were created and a certain amount of liquid was absorbed by the potato
_________________________________________________________________________
Type of reaction

decomposition
_________________________________________________________________________
Where did we obtain the catalyst from? What is the function of a catalyst?

O2, a catalyst speeds up the reaction

_________________________________________________________________________
Problem: If you had 0.5 moles of hydrogen peroxide, how many moles of oxygen were
produced?

0.25 moles of oxygen
