Characteristics of Japanese Traditional Townhouse, Kyo-machiya

In Kyoto, there’s japanese traditional house called kyo-machiya. This type of housing use none to attach
each wood for the house structure. Kyo-machiya is well known for its cultural design and decor, the
building process of this house is so complicated, due to the layered wall from scraps, like the straw and
muds for the wall and rock for its foundation, in the center of each kyo-machiya there's a garden to keep
the room get enough lighting, the kitchen was design with double height ceiling with a small window for
the air circulator so smoke from cooking won't trap inside the house. Basic kyo-machiya is commonly
called as unagi no nedoko [うなぎの寝床] or eel beds due to its long and narrow design. The front part
is called mise no ma [店の間] or shop space, this space usually becomes a mini market or an etalase for
art gallery. Then the following was called toriniwa [通り庭] or earthern floor corridor, it is used as
kitchen and you have to wear slippers to roam there, in this area the ceiling is double height from the
other part so the smoke from cooking could escape easily. Behind the shop space there's a living room
called kyoushitsubu [居室部], heres where you host guest or simply have dinner with your family. Beside
it, there's a classic japanese wooden veranda called engawa [縁側], which is right in front of the center
garden or tsuboniwa [坪庭], usually near the tsuboniwa there'll be a bathroom. in kyo-machiya every
stairs comes up with hakokaidan [箱階段] or box stairs to load some things.
