 Approaches to Teaching
The IB DP Programme has a student centred and constructivist
approach which highlights the significance of the concurrency of
learning and connectedness. While IB DP adopts these approaches,
there are 6 pedagogical principles which consist of teaching in all of
the IB Programmes.
Teaching based on Inquiry
Being an inquirer is one of the IB
learner profile attributes. But
how can we teach based on
inquiry?
The main idea of teaching based
on inquiry is to lead students to
think with their natural curiosity
while also having interactions
with each other and with the
teacher.
There are some other methods that
inquiry based teaching has and two of
them are called experiential learning
and problem based learning.
Experiential learning is about getting
students involved with directly the
environment of the project they are
working on.
Problem based learning is an
approach where students define,
analyse and create possible solutions
for real life problems.
 Teaching Focused on
Conceptual Understanding
Teaching focused on conceptual understanding is a
way of teaching where students get to engage with
complex ideas and discuss those ideas well through
the usage of their higher order thinking skills. It
leads students to understand why they are learning
what they are learning and it makes it easier to learn
new topics.
Teaching Developed
in Local and Global
Teaching developed in local and global contexts
is a way of teaching where students can make
connections with their lives and real life

Contexts problems. Through the connections they make

with their life and the topic itself, they can
engage with the topic more as the connection
they make is personal. This also helps students
to understand the reason why they are learning
that topic.
Moreover, this principle of teaching can help
students to be international minded as they also
engage with problems that are in the global
context.

Differentiation is about planning the lesson in a way
that would consider the differences of the learners.
Powell and Kusuma-Powell (2008) propose the idea
that teachers should engage with five professional
inquiries in order to teach well in differentiated
learning. Those professional inquiries are about
knowing your students as learners, knowing yourself
as teacher, knowing your curriculum, knowing your
formative assessments and knowing your collegial
relationships.
Teaching Informed by Assessment
(Formative and Summative)
Assessments in general are things
that plays a significant role as they
both support and measure learning
In the IB, assessments are based on
the course objectives and aims and
thus, being an effective teacher of IB
leads the way to be an effective
teaching for the assessments.
 Case Activity
This activity is about the principles of
teaching based on inquiry, teaching
based on effective teamwork and
collaboration and teaching based on
local and global contexts.
