STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL

STRUCTURES – GENERAL

1. Allowable Damage Limits

A. This establishes the maximum amount of damage that may exist on any of the SA226/SA227
series of airplanes without repair. These limits will not cover all possible damage but should
apply to a very large percentage of damage that is found.

(1) An inspector will have to exercise some judgement in attempting to match these limits to
the damage found.

(2) Cracks must be repaired, except as discussed in other Fairchild Aircraft documentation.
I.E.,Service Bulletions, sub-section -90-XX of chapters 52 through 57 of this manual, or the
Maintenance Manual. Cracks which are not addressed in the above mentioned
documentation, and which exceed the limits listed below must be repaired immediately.
Cracks which do not exceed the limits below must be repaired within 100 hours.

(3) Allowable damage limits for parts other than skins are the same as shown for skins except
crack lengths which are given here:

(a) Cracks across frames or stringers may be 0.25 inch.

(b) Cracks across ribs of wing, stabilizers, flaps, and control surfaces may be 0.50 inch.

B. Loose rivets are ones that can be manually rotated or can be seen to be ineffective. "Smoking"
stains on the aft side of a rivet only indicates it is not 100% tight in hole.

(1) Loose rivets are not allowed on the edge of pressurized skin panels nor on the chordwise
edge of wing skin panels.

(2) Elsewhere the number of loose rivets allowed is 1 in 12 along the edge of a panel or 1 in
6 if not on the edge.

C. Nacelle skin warp limits are the same as DENT limits. Inspection of internal ribs, frames, etc.,
in and around the area should be performed as well as external inspection of wing, nacelle,
landing gear, and wheelwell, for cracks, warpage, or damage. If no other discrepancies are
noted, the aircraft can be returned to service.

D. Passenger and cargo door hinges, 27-24145 and MS20001-P8, 27-24147 respectively.
Any of these 4 hinge halves may be missing one lug at each end, but must be replaced before
the next one cracks off.

E. Allowable crack lengths for 100 HRS. of unpressurized flight time from date crack is
reported. These data permit repair to be made without serious interruption of scheduled
operations.

(1) Passenger door frame or intercostal may have inner flange cracked through with crack
extending half way through web.

2 Longitudinal means fore-aft direction on fuselage and nacelle but spanwise on wing and
stabilizers. If crack is more than 30° from longitude or transverse use the smaller limit.
Distance between allowable cracks must be greater than 8 inches.

2. Wing to Fuselage Fairing Allowable Fastener Pattern

A. Limitations from missing fasteners through the 27-30014 and 27-30031 Wing to Fuselage
Fairings per ARP 53-50-8927.

(1) The limitations are as followings:

(a) No fastener forward of FS242 is permitted to be missing.

(b) No fastener aft of FS242 may be missing that results in a fastener spacing of greater
than 5 inches between remaining fasteners.

3. Rudder Torque Tube

A. Rudder torque tube has an allowable damage limit of 8% of wall thickness. Wall thickness is
0.049". Therefore, the damage limit to the tube by scratch, dent, or chafe is 0.003".

4. Obsolete Repair Do Not Use or Obsolete Do Not Use

A. Certain repairs in this manual will, from time to time, be designated as "Obsolete Repair Do
Not Use " or "Obsolete Do Not Use". These are repairs or general information which may have
been refined by another Approved Repair Procedure (ARP) or new section of general
information and may reappear in the manual at a later revision or whose distribution basis has
changed in order to control their application more closely.

These repairs are airworthy as originally published and need not be modified or removed from
an aircraft in which they have been incorporated.

Copies of Approved Repair Procedures and FAA Forms 8110-3, "statement of Compliance
With the Federal Aviation Regulations," are available from Fairchild Aircraft Service Engineer-
ing Department.

5. Part-for-Part Replacement

A. When a major repair is accomplished by part-for-part replacement, and using the procedures
contained in the Structural Repair Manual (SRM), it will be acceptable to document the work
on a FAA Form 337, with no further requirement for FAA approved data.
