Chichen Itza El Castillo Pyramid Design

By Stan Cizek September 23, 2020

Abstract

Multitudes of people visit Chichen Itza each year and marvel at the El Castillo pyramid. Those that visit
during the Equinox have the opportunity to observe seven triangles of light descending or ascending the
pyramid. While the pyramid was reconstructed decades ago, there is little information from
archaeologists or institutions about what the structure of this pyramid represents. In fact, this pyramid
can be described using simple geometry and a basic knowledge of fractals.

Summary

One can build a correct and scalable model of the El Castillo pyramid in 4 easy steps using several
hundred cubes of a children’s Interlocking cubes set.

Step 1

Make a cross 13 cubes in length as shown in Picture 1.

Step 2

Lift the inner 5 cubes 4 cubes high as shown in Picture 2. You just created a correct outline of the El
Castillo pyramid in Chichen Itza.

Step 3

Referencing Picture 3: In the first row fill the space between each arm of the cross with cubes so that
you get the edge (side) of the pyramid. Do this for each row above while reducing number of cubes in

1
each subsequent row diagonal from 13 to 11 to 9 to 7 and 5 at the top as shown in Picture 2 and Picture
3a.

Step 4

Make a duplicate set of the outer 4 cubes (4 sets), rotate them 90 degrees from the diagonal and push
them against the top platform edge (side). You just created 4 staircases and completed the scalable
model of the Chichen Itza El Castillo pyramid as seen in Picture 4 and are ready for additional analysis.

Detailed observations and analysis

Observation 1

Based on this model, it becomes apparent that the pyramid is made up of at least two closely coupled
(interlocking) objects. The pyramid body and the staircases.

Observation 2

The pyramid angles and slopes are predetermined by the number of cubes and the method of their
repeating pattern arrangement.

Observation 3

The side/edge of the pyramid is a jagged line and not straight line. Thus, the diagonal 13 cubes become
13 sides on the bottom edge and the diagonal 5 cubes at the top platform become 5 sides on the top
platform, creating perimeters of 52 and 20 respectively.

Observation 4

The complete object is similar to a repeating pattern of the Von Koch Square wave snowflake in three
dimensions.

“Von Koch fractal square” https://mae.ufl.edu/~uhk/FRACTAL-SQUARE.pdf.

Observation 5

The sanctuary inside the temple on the top platform is in the form of a square wave. A root of the
pyramid repeating pattern construction is below.

Some interesting number correlations

Metric system use

Ancient Mayans made it easy for science in our time because the numerology of the diagonal (13x6=78)
would work in the metric system of meters. The pyramid diagonal is 78 meters. All other measures are
in corresponding metric units of measures with the pyramid height of 24 meters and the temple height
at the top of 6 meters.

Number 819

The descending 7 triangles at the Equinox are numerically more impressive than the image of the
descending serpent. It explicitly derives correlation between 9 pyramid steps and 91 steps of the
staircase as 9 x 7 x 13 = 91 x 13 = 819.

It can be also written as 3 x 21 x 13 = 3 x 273 = 819 which represents the 3 Moon orbits in days at a 360
degree orbit.

Number 364 + 1

The interpretation of the number 364 + 1 is well known in the Pyramid context. It is interpreted as a
365-day Earth year. However, there are additional interesting mathematical correlations.

4 x 7 x 13 = 28 x 13 = 364 + 1 = 365

Thus, not only is a 27.3-day Moon orbit defined, but also a 28-day 13 Moon Earth orbit around the Sun is
recorded in this number and the function f(x) + 1 is used. This function is used in other places involved
with Mayan mathematics.

Earth Radius 6371 km

The Earth mean radius can be written as 6370 + 1 km. Similar to 364 + 1 day’s format

Seven triangles multiplied by 5 cubes of top platform = 35

Seven triangles multiplied by 13 cubes of the base = 91

For the two diagonals of the pyramid it is 35 x 91 x 2 = 6370. This number could be also written as 49 x
130 = 6370, providing some basis for interpretation of the 260 “divine day” cycle and other biblical
related occurrences.

These numbers are predetermined by the fractal nature of the 6x6x6 cube used in the design of the
pyramid. Numbers 2,5,7 and 13 are nondimensional primes determined regardless of the unit of
measure; however, “coincidently” defining the Earth mean radius in metric kilometers.

Number 22.5 (degrees)

The pyramid is oriented 22.5 degrees off the North. That coincides with an Earth obliquity minimum
(22.5 to 24.5, currently at 23.5). If this orientation is based on the observation at the time, that would
represent a period 30 thousand plus years ago at a minimum. If this orientation is theoretical, how can

4
this be explained without using tools, advanced astronomy, mathematical knowledge, or observations
over a long period of time. This is an interesting dilemma.

Numbers 1, 4 and 5 correlation

The correlation of numbers 1 (temple), 4 (levels of pyramid height) and 5 (1+ 4 = 5) total height is
interesting because the same formula does appear in the Dresden Codex on page 3. See the triangle
formed by these numbers at the top.

(While musing over the Dresden Codex (Gates version) page 3 interpretation, that didn’t make too much
sense to me. I attempted a trial and error approach to find an alternative solution. Intuitively, I applied
the 5 signs on this page in their currently recognized sequence to this fractal square pattern, and the
result was what I call an “Asymmetric Pentagram” or “Venus Orbital Pattern”. To my surprise, you can
apply this pattern to many objects, structures, and locations and match angles and proportions with an
unexpected accuracy. On this topic, I posted several papers on Academia.edu.)

Cross Definition

The Von Koch Square wave snowflake of the top platform also defines three distinct crosses that can be
associated with a unique set of symbols.

Conclusion

It is possible that all that is presented here is a coincidence. However, the geometry and math are
undeniable; the result of a simple repeating pattern of a 6x6x6 cube. It would support the idea that the
Earth-Moon coupling is not a random act of chance.

Maybe today we can learn something from ancient Mayans about astronomy. There are things that can
be observed and described in a simpler way than just complex computer calculations and simulations.
