1. Purpose and Scope


To provide a broad summary of hazards and risks in the local area, (including public
safety hazards) that are associated with activities, processes, products, services and
environment. Risks listed in the register are not rated as this information can be
obtained in the detailed risk management documents addressing specific activities.

This Procedure applies to all UNSW workers, all identified or foreseeable hazards and
risks that can arise from:
• any UNSW work environment;
• any UNSW work, research or teaching activity;

2. Definitions
No definitions relevant to this procedure.

3. Procedure
The Head of School / Unit must ensure that there is a Hazard and Risk Register for
their area, which is kept up-to-date. The Health and Safety Unit shall develop a
UNSW-wide Hazard and Risk Register, based on the local area registers.

3.1 Updating or Creating a HS Hazard and Risk Register


1. Review the combined data from your risk management forms, risk assessment
documents and corrective actions register to establish broad categories of hazard
and risk types
2. Establish a Hazard and Risk register from information obtained in step 1. The final
document should cover the risk profile for the School or Unit.
3. HS 653 HS Hazard and Risk Register template can be used as a guide for
developing your own register.
4. Review and update your register as new hazards are identified and as part of your
document review process.
5. A UNSW hazard and risk register will be maintained with aggregated information
from step 2.
